(My Sportsbook) - A dizzying number of playoff scenarios are still on the plate as the Northwest Division champion
Denver Nuggets finish the regular season in Portland against the playoff-bound Trail Blazers.
The Nuggets have already secured home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs for the first time in 21 years and now hope to clinch the second- best record in the Western Conference and set a franchise record with their 55th win tonight.
The Blazers, meanwhile, would earn home-court advantage in the first round with a triumph tonight and tie Denver atop the Northwest. The Nuggets, however, have already cliched the division crown thanks to a better record within the division.
Portland can also clinch the fourth seed in the West with a loss tonight if San Antonio also loses at home to New Orleans.
J.R. Smith scored a career-high 45 points and set a Nuggets franchise record with 11 three-pointers on Monday to lead Denver to the Northwest Division title with a 118-98 win over lowly Sacramento at the Pepsi Center.
Smith broke the Nuggets record for most three-pointers in a game when he hit his 10th trey of the tilt with 3:11 remaining in the contest. With 1:50 to play, Smith brought the crowd into a frenzy with his 11th three of the game.
Sacramento fouled Smith from that point on to prevent him from tying the NBA record of 12 three-pointers in a game.
"It was definitely one of my better shooting nights. My eleventh three, I don't know how that went in but I'll take it," Smith said.
Michael Adams and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf set the previous franchise mark of nine three-pointers. Smith's previous career high was eight treys, which he has done three times, including earlier this month versus Utah.
Smith, who played just under 30 minutes off the bench, had a previous career high of 43 points, which he set at Chicago last season.
Smith went 11-of-18 from beyond the arc and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line for the Nuggets, who won their first division title since the 2005-2006 campaign. Carmelo Anthony ended with 21 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Linas Kleiza finished with 17 points off the bench.
The Nuggets can also secure the second seed in the West with a loss tonight if the Houston Rockets also lose at Dallas.
Portland, meanwhile, is also coming off an impressive win Monday when Travis Outlaw poured in 21 points and grabbed five rebounds, as the Blazers pounded the lowly Oklahoma City Thunder, 113-83, at the Rose Garden.
Brandon Roy added 20 points for the Blazers, who have won nine of their past 10 games. Greg Oden ended with 16 points and nine boards off the bench. Rudy Fernandez and Channing Frye had 14 and 11 points, respectively, in reserve roles.
The Blazers, who have won 18 of their past 20 at home and are 33-7 at the Rose Garden, have lost two of three to Denver this season but earned a 101-92 victory over the Nuggets in Portland on December 23.
