(My Sportsbook) - Scott Baker makes his season debut this evening when the
Minnesota Twins play the third contest of their four-game series with the
Toronto Blue Jays at the Metrodome.
Baker, who signed a four-year, $15.25 million contract this offseason, was originally slated to be the Twins' Opening Day starter, but he experienced soreness in his shoulder right before the season and started the year on the disabled list.
The 27-year-old righty enjoyed a breakout 2008 campaign that saw him go 11-4 with a 3.45 earned run average in a career-high 28 starts.
Baker, who was 5-1 in 12 home starts last year, is 0-1 in three starts against the Jays, while pitching to a 3.72 ERA in those contests.
Minnesota picked up a rare win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday, as Joe Crede doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Twins to a 3-2 triumph.
Justin Morneau finished 3-for-5 with a double and a run batted in for the Twins, who had dropped 10 straight to the Jays. Glen Perkins gave up two runs on seven hits over eight innings, but came away with a no-decision. Jesse Crain (1-0) tossed the final two frames to collect the win.
Rod Barajas had two hits and knocked in a run for the Blue Jays. Ricky Romero did not factor into the decision after surrendering two runs on eight hits in eight innings of work. Jesse Carlson (0-1) was saddled with the loss after yielding one run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings.
With one away in the 11th, Morneau smacked a single through the hole on the right side of the infield. After Michael Cuddyer flied out, Crede drilled a ball to the center field wall that allowed Morneau to score all the way from first base.
Getting the call for the Jays tonight will be 29-year-old right-hander Scott Richmond, who did not get a decision in his first trip to the hill last Friday. Richmond lasted just four innings to the Cleveland Indians in that one, surrendering three runs and five hits in his team's 13-7 win.
Richmond has never faced the Twins.
Toronto is 18-7 against Minnesota since the start of the 2006 campaign, including a 10-6 mark at the Metrodome.
