Chelsea advances after 4-4 draw with Liverpool

London, England (My Sportsbook) - Captain Frank Lampard scored twice in a six- goal second half as Chelsea tied Liverpool 4-4 on Tuesday in a wild second leg at Stamford Bridge to advance to the Champions League semifinals on aggregate, 7-5.

Chelsea grabbed a 3-1 lead at Anfield last week, but Liverpool scored twice in the opening 28 minutes to level the aggregate and after Chelsea rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the second leg - and a 6-3 aggregate lead - Liverpool responded with two more goals.

Lampard, who scored Chelsea's last two goals, finally put the match away in the 89th minute when he slipped a shot past Liverpool goalie Pepe Reina and off the inside of the left post.

Didier Drogba and Alex also scored in the second half for Chelsea, while Fabio Aurelio, Xabi Alonso, Lucas and Dirk Kuyt scored Liverpool's goals.

Chelsea, which lost the Champions League final to Manchester United last season in penalty kicks, will play Barcelona in the semifinals.

Barcelona advanced to the semifinals following a 1-1 draw at Bayern Munich that gave the Spanish giants a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Aurelio stunned Chelsea in the 19th minute off a free kick, taking a shot from the right side that left Blues goalie Petr Cech - who was preparing for a cross - flat-footed and found the lower right corner.

Less than 10 minutes later, Chelsea hero Branislav Ivanovic - who scored two in the first leg - pulled down Alonso in the penalty area to hand Liverpool a spot kick. Alonso easily buried the shot to the left as Cech dove the other way.

Liverpool just needed one more goal to advance - and it scored two times after halftime - but Chelsea was up to the challenge with four goals.

Drogba's goal in the 51st minute was a gift, when he slid to get a slight touch on the ball at the right end line - about five yards from the right post - and Reina couldn't handle the slight misdirection and spilled the ball into his own net. Drobga was credited with his fifth goal in five Champions League games but it was a goal Reina should have prevented.

Drobga just missed converting a free kick in the 56th minute, but Alex followed an unstoppable free kick from 30 yards that swerved away from the outstretched arms of Reina and just under the crossbar to level the match at 2.

Drogba continued to create for Chelsea, nearly setting up the Blues' third goal when he dropped a pass off for Michael Ballack, who didn't place the shot well, and was denied by Reina in the 67th minute.

Less than 10 minutes later, though, Drogba again set up a teammate, this time Lampard, and his first-time effort from six yards left Reina with no chance.

Chelsea took the lead in the match 3-2 and seemed to lock up a spot in the next round based on the 6-3 aggregate advantage, but Liverpool didn't go away very easily.

Lucas gave Liverpool some hope in the 81st, unleashing a shot from outside the area that took a deflection off of Michael Essien and sailed by Cech into the left side of the net.

Two minutes later, Kuyt lost two Chelsea defenders to run under a cross from Alberto Riera and headed powerfully past Cech to put Liverpool up 4-3, and back to within 6-5 on aggregate. Liverpool just needed another goal to advance.

Liverpool brought Ryan Babel off the bench in the 85th for its last push, but Lampard put the match away in the 89th.

Off a throw in from the right, Nicolas Anelka slipped a ball into the area to Lampard and the captain drilled a shot off the left post and in to keep Chelsea on target for another Champions League final.

Liverpool still nearly pulled one goal back in the 90th, but David Ngog had his shot headed off the line by Essien and Chelsea once again ousted Liverpool from the tournament.

Chelsea defeated Liverpool in the semifinals last season and the teams have met in four of the last five seasons in the elimination stage of Europe's top club event.

At Bayern Munich, Franck Ribery scored in the 47th minute for Bayern but Barca equalized in the 78th to deny the German champions some revenge in the second leg.

Barcelona won the first leg at the Camp Nou last week, 4-0, on the strength of two goals by Lionel Messi. Seydou Keita scored the lone goal in Munich.

On Wednesday, the quarterfinals conclude with Manchester United visiting FC Porto with the series tied 2-2, and Villarreal visiting Arsenal with the series tied 1-1. The semifinals are April 28-29.
