Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - Former NBA star and head coach Isiah Thomas is set to become the next men's basketball coach at Florida International University. The Miami Herald cited a source close to the situation as saying Thomas and the school were completing details of a contract late Monday night. FIU's position became vacant on Monday when Sergio Rouco was reassigned within the school's athletic department after five seasons at the helm. The Golden Panthers were 55-94 under Rouco, including a 13-20 mark this past season. Thomas, who turns 48 at the end of this month, coached a total of five seasons in the NBA, three with the Pacers and two tumultuous seasons with the Knicks. His Indiana teams never advanced past the first round of the playoffs and the Knicks didn't make the postseason during his short tenure. A Hall of Fame player in 13 years with the Detroit Pistons, Thomas has a career coaching record of 187-223. He was just 56-108 in two seasons with the Knicks. Thomas' time with the Knicks, which also included a stint as team president, was also marred by a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former team executive Anucha Browne Sanders. This past October, Thomas was hospitalized in Westchester County after an apparent overdose of sleeping pills.
