Gagne and Flyers down Isles

Uniondale, NY (My Sportsbook) - Simon Gagne had a goal and an assist, as the Philadelphia Flyers inched closer to securing the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference with a 3-2 win over the lowly New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

Joffrey Lupul and Mike Knuble also lit the lamp for the Flyers, who will host the New York Rangers on Sunday. Martin Biron turned aside 30 shots to pick up the win.

The Flyers, who are tied with Pittsburgh for the fourth spot in the East, will face the Penguins in the first round of the playoffs. Pittsburgh beat Montreal on Saturday. What remains to be seen, though, is which team will have home-ice advantage. Both squads have 99 points on the season, but Philadelphia has one game left, which will take place on Sunday. Should the Flyers get at least one point, they will have the fourth seed and home ice; however, if Philadelphia is beaten in regulation, the Penguins, who will at that point have more wins than the Flyers, will take the fourth spot.

"I have seen the focus get a lot better this week, and even in practice the guys seem a little more relaxed. That's a sign that the playoffs are getting closer," Philadelphia coach John Stevens said.

Sean Bergenheim and Tim Jackman scored for the Islanders, who have lost three straight games and will host Boston on Sunday. Yann Danis stopped 24 shots in the loss.

New York will finish with the worst record in the NHL.

"For me, the difference in the game was special teams. Our special teams has struggled over the last 10 games," Islanders coach Scott Gordon said.

The Islanders drew first blood with 5:54 left in the first period on Bergenheim's 15th goal of the year. Doug Weight, who was stationed at the left circle, hit an open Bergenheim in front of the net with a perfect pass. Bergenheim chipped the disc through the five-hole of Biron.

Lupul's power-play tally at the 5:04 mark of the second frame deadlocked the game at one. Lupul fired a wrister from the right circle that beat Danis glove side.

Philadelphia went ahead 2-1 on Knuble's power-play goal at the 10:51 mark. Knuble collected a rebound in front of the net before chipping the disc through the pads of Danis.

New York responded with a goal from Jackman with 4:33 remaining to tie the tilt at two. Following a Flyers turnover in their own zone, Jackman lasered a shot that deflected off the right post and across the goal line.

Less than a minute later, Gagne tallied his 34th goal of the year to put Philadelphia ahead 3-2. Gagne's shot from the left circle hit off the left post and went in.

Biron made eight saves in the final period to secure the victory for Philadelphia.
