(My Sportsbook) - No longer in control of their own destiny, the short-handed
Calgary Flames take on the
Edmonton Oilers tonight at Pengrowth Saddledome in the finale of a regular-season ending home-and-home series.
With last night's 5-1 loss in Edmonton, the Flames have now lost three of their last four games and are just 6-11-0 over their last 17 games. They still trail first-place Vancouver by two points in the Northwest Division standings, and the Canucks end their season this afternoon in Colorado.
That means Calgary could already be locked into the fifth seed by the time it takes the ice -- Chicago has already clinched the fourth spot -- but a regulation loss by Vancouver and a win tonight by the Flames would give them the division title and the third seed because Calgary would have more wins.
The Flames, who last won the Northwest title in 2005-06, skated with just 15 players in last night's game due to a salary cap crunch and a rash of injuries. Dion Phaneuf (undisclosed), Curtis Glencross (undisclosed), Robyn Regehr (knee) and Cory Sarich (foot) are among those injured for the Flames who are not on injured reserve.
Phaneuf and Glencross were late scratches in last night's game that saw Mike Cammalleri net the only Calgary goal. The Flames also went 0-for-4 on the power play, stretching their string of futility to 0-for-40 on the man advantage over the last nine games.
Miikka Kiprusoff took the loss, allowing three goals on 31 shots. Curtis McElhinney finished the game by giving up a pair of scores on five shots.
Calgary has still won four of its last six at home and is 26-10-4 as the host this year.
Eliminated from postseason play for a third straight season, the Oilers got a goal and two assists out of both Sheldon Souray and Shawn Horcoff last night. Ales Kotalik, Steve MacIntyre and Patrick O'Sullivan also tallied for the Oilers, who have won two of three.
Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers stopped 31-of-32 shots to post his first win since November 10.
The Oilers wrapped up their final homestand of the season 2-4-0 and are 20-17-3 on the road this year.
Edmonton has won three of five versus the Flames this year and has also won three of its last five trips to Calgary.
