(My Sportsbook) - With the Eastern Conference's top seed secured, the
Boston Bruins will try to do their part to stay in the race for the Presidents' Trophy when they visit the
Buffalo Sabres for today's battle at HSBC Arena.
The Bruins have 114 points on the year and are three in back of San Jose for the league's top record. Wins by Boston in its final two games and a loss by the Sharks in their final regular-season test in Los Angeles today would give the Bruins their first Presidents' Trophy since the 1989-90 campaign.
The Sabres, meanwhile, recorded wins in each of their last two games, but were eliminated from postseason contention thanks to the New York Rangers' win over Philadelphia on Thursday.
Boston has won seven of its last eight games and is coming off Thursday's overtime decision against the rival Montreal Canadiens. Mark Recchi scored two goals, including the game-winner in OT, and dished out two assists, as the Bruins beat the Habs, 5-4, at TD Banknorth Garden. Despite the loss, Montreal secured a playoff spot.
Zdeno Chara, Patrice Bergeron, and Phil Kessel also lit the lamp for the Bruins, who bounced back from a loss to Ottawa on Tuesday. Bergeron added two helpers and Chara one. Tim Thomas stopped 35 shots to pick up his 35th win of the year.
It was the final home game of the regular season for Boston, which is closing the campaign on a two-game road trip that will end Sunday against the New York Islanders. The Bruins are 23-12-4 as the guest this year.
The Sabres recorded a 5-1 decision over Carolina on Thursday, but it was not enough to keep their playoff hopes alive. Jason Pominville scored twice as Buffalo ended Carolina's nine-game winning streak.
Matt Ellis, Jochen Hecht and Derek Roy also tallied for the Sabres, while Tim Connolly, Daniel Paille and Jaroslav Spacek each registered two assists in the win.
Ryan Miller was solid, turning aside 26-of-27 shots for the Sabres.
Buffalo is 22-15-3 as the host this year, but has been handed defeats in each of its last two games in western New York.
Today's game marks the final meeting of the season between these Northeast Division rivals. The clubs last met on January 3 in Boston when they Sabres recorded a 4-2 decision to take a three games to two edge in the season series. Buffalo has taken five of seven and six of nine overall from the Bruins and Boston has dropped three straight and five of its last seven at HSBC Arena.
