Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - Jorge Cantu's single in the bottom of the ninth was the game-winner as Florida clipped the
New York Mets, 5-4, at Dolphin Stadium.
Emilio Bonifacio began the rally with a one-out infield single off Pedro Feliciano (0-1). John Baker fanned, then Darren O'Day entered and issued a walk to Hanley Ramirez.
Cantu ended the game by dumping a base hit to left, allowing Bonifacio to come in safely. That made a winner of Matt Lindstrom (1-0), who was saddled with a blown save after failing to hold off New York in the top of the ninth.
Bonifacio finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored for the Marlins, who have begun the season with four straight wins after sweeping a three-game series from Washington. Florida had never begun a season with four straight wins since entering the majors in 1993.
"It's nice, but none of us were thinking about it," Lindstrom said of the franchise record. "We're taking it a game at a time. That's really the motivation in the clubhouse right now."
Ramirez was 3-for-4, including a solo homer, and drove in a pair, while Cantu had two hits with two RBI and Dan Uggla also homered. Anibal Sanchez started and hurled five innings of four-hit ball without allowing a run. He fanned five and walked three.
Carlos Beltran went 3-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored for the Mets, who have dropped two in a row after opening the year with consecutive wins in Cincinnati.
Fernando Tatis and Jeremy Reed also knocked in a run each in the setback. Starter John Maine gave up two runs and two hits -- both homers -- over his five-inning start, striking out five with one walk.
Florida got on board in its first at-bat, with Ramirez launching a pitch over the wall in center. Uggla made it 2-0 in the second with a long leadoff solo shot into the upper-deck seats in left near the foul pole.
In the sixth, Beltran hit one into the seats in left to pull New York within 2-1 but could get no closer despite two on with two out.
Florida struck back with a run off Sean Green in the home half, as Cantu punched a single to left to score Bonifacio, who led off with a base hit.
New York plated a pair in the seventh to tie the game, as Beltran's fielder's choice grounder scored Daniel Murphy and later, pinch-hitter Tatis lifted a sac fly to left scoring David Wright, who had walked earlier.
The Marlins answered back off Bobby Parnell in their at-bat. Bonifacio reached on a two-out bunt single, Baker followed with a base hit, and Ramirez singled to center to bring in Bonifacio.
In the top of the ninth, Reed, pinch-hitting for Luis Castillo with two outs, stroked an RBI single off Lindstrom for a 4-4 deadlock.
"I'm just trying to get a pitch," Reed admitted. "I gotta come out and stay prepared for the whole game. Until you get in that box, it's a different look."
