Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Jason Schmidt tries to become the first 12-game winner in the National League this season, as he takes the mound for the visiting
San Francisco Giants in the third installment of a four-game series against the
Colorado Rockies.
Schmidt hasn't lost since April 21 and has won 11 straight decisions. The Lewiston, Idaho native is the first Giants hurler to win at least 11 in a row since Jack Sanford, who set the San Francisco mark with 16 straight victories in 1962. The club record is 19, shared by Tim Keefe (1888) and Rube Marquard (1912).
Schmidt's latest victory came last Sunday against Arizona after he allowed just two runs and five hits in eight strong innings. He also struck out 10 batters and walked only two.
The 31-year-old righthander is 10-2 with a 3.43 ERA in 17 career games against the Rockies. Schmidt is also 3-0 with a 5.35 ERA lifetime at Coors Field.
The Rockies hope Aaron Cook can win his third straight start, as he heads to the mound tonight. Cook won last Saturday in San Diego, surrendering one run and eight hits in six innings of work.
Cook is 2-2 with a 6.55 ERA in five career starts and five career bullpen appearances against the Giants.
Todd Greene homered twice and drove in four runs to back the strong pitching of Shawn Estes, as the Rockies thumped the Giants, 7-1, to even the series at one game apiece on Friday. San Francisco had its four-game win streak halted.
Estes (9-4) allowed just seven hits, two walks and a run over eight solid frames to pick up the victory. He walked two and fanned two.
Vinny Castilla was 2-for-2 with an RBI triple, two walks and two runs scored for the Rockies.
Giants' starter Kirk Rueter (5-7) was throttled for seven hits and five runs over six innings. He walked one and fanned four.
Pedro Feliz had three hits and Yorvit Torrealba added two for the Giants, who dropped to 1 1/2 games behind Los Angeles for first place in the NL West.
The Giants have dominated the Rockies recently, winning eight of 12 meetings this season and 16 of 21 going back to 2003.
