Kansas City, MO (My Sportsbook) - The
Kansas City Royals placed right fielder Jose Guillen on the 15-day disabled list with a tear of his right groin muscle and recalled pitcher Sidney Ponson from Triple-A Omaha, the club announced on Friday.
Guillen, who is expected to miss two weeks, was injured when he ran out a ground ball in the ninth inning of the Royals' 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.
"Jose wanted to play through it, but this is the right thing to do for him and the team," Kansas City General Manager Dayton Moore said.
For his career, the veteran outfielder has a .273 average with 186 home runs, 770 runs batted in over 1,424 games with Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Arizona, Cincinnati, Oakland, Anaheim, Washington, Seattle and Kansas City.
Ponson agreed to a minor league deal with the club in the offseason and will get the start when the Royals face his former team, the New York Yankees, on Friday.
The 14-year veteran has a career 90-106 record with a 4.95 earned-run average with Baltimore, San Francisco, the Yankees, St. Louis, Minnesota and Texas.
