(My Sportsbook) - The
Milwaukee Brewers have won the first series of the season five straight years and will try to continue that trend tonight against the
San Francisco Giants in the finale of a three-game series at AT&T Park.
The Brewers dropped the opener to San Francisco on Tuesday, then rebounded with a 4-2 triumph last night in the second test.
Starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo had a big day on the mound and at the plate, allowing two runs in 6 2/3 innings for the win and also belting a three-run homer off of Giants starter Randy Johnson in his San Francisco debut.
Gallardo also struck out six and walked a pair of batters. Carlos Villanueva picked up the save with two K's in the ninth and is closing in place of Trevor Hoffman, who was shelved to start the season with an oblique strain.
Mike Cameron hit a solo home run to account for Milwaukee's other run.
Milwaukee hasn't lost a season-opening series since 2003, when the St. Louis Cardinals swept the Brewers in three games at Busch Stadium.
The Brewers will hand the ball to Manny Parra on Thursday, and he is entering his third season with the club. After making nine appearances (two starts) in his first season in 2007, Parra took the hill 32 times, with 29 starts, last year.
Parra recorded a 10-8 mark with a 4.39 earned run average over 166.0 innings pitched. The left-hander, who had 147 K's in 2008, is 2-0 with a 2.95 ERA in five career games, two starts, against San Francisco.
Meanwhile, Johnson was rocked for four runs and four hits with seven strikeouts over five innings last night. The Big Unit is still five wins shy of becoming the 24th pitcher in major league history with 300 career victories (295-160).
Randy Winn and Emmanuel Burriss each had an RBI for San Francisco, which got a pair of doubles from Aaron Rowand.
Giants starter Matt Cain enters his fifth season with the ballclub and has made at least 31 starts in each of the past three years. Cain, who owns just two winning records in his time with the Giants, went 8-14 with a 3.76 earned run average in 34 trips to the mound in 2008.
Cain, a right-hander, has hurled at least 190 innings in three consecutive seasons. He hasn't fared too well in his brief matchups with Milwaukee, going 0-2 with a 5.54 earned run average through 13 innings pitched. Cain went 5-7 in 18 starts at home a year ago.
Milwaukee won all six meetings with the Giants a year ago.
