(My Sportsbook) - The
New York Rangers will try to clinch a playoff berth tonight when they welcome the rival
Philadelphia Flyers for an Atlantic Division battle at Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers are currently holding onto the eighth and final postseason spot in the Eastern Conference with 91 points on the year and can make the playoffs for a fourth straight year with a victory tonight. New York is two points ahead of Florida, which would be eliminated from playoff contention with a Blueshirts win.
The Flyers, meanwhile, secured a playoff spot with Tuesday's victory over the visiting Panthers. Philadelphia has 97 points and is tied with Carolina for the fourth seed in the East. The Hurricanes, who are hosting Buffalo tonight, have two games left in the regular season, while Philly has three remaining.
Tonight marks the final home test of the regular season for New York, which will complete its schedule Sunday in Philadelphia. However, this is not a home-and-home series as the Flyers are playing a road game against the New York Islanders on Saturday.
The Flyers and Rangers have split four meetings this year and Philadelphia has taken four of the last six encounters overall. Philly has also posted three wins in its last five trips to the Big Apple.
The Rangers ended a two-game slide and won for just the second time in six games with Tuesday's decision over visiting Montreal. Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves to give New York the big two points in the 3-1 victory against the Canadiens.
Chris Drury scored twice and Nik Antropov also lit the lamp for the Rangers, while Ryan Callahan had two assists in the win.
The Rangers have a solid 25-11-4 record as the host this year and have won three straight and seven of their last eight home contests.
The Flyers helped the Rangers' playoff chances by notching the 2-1 victory over Florida. Jeff Carter scored the game-winner early in the third period to help Philadelphia edge the Panthers at Wachovia Center.
Joffrey Lupul picked up the other goal for the Flyers, who have won two of three and earned their third trip to the postseason in the last four seasons. Martin Biron made 29 stops for the win, his 28th of the season.
Philadelphia is 19-13-7 as the road club this year and has dropped its last two as the visiting club. The Flyers will play their final road test of the year Saturday at Nassau Coliseum.
