(My Sportsbook) - The
New York Yankees' big-name free agent signings didn't pan out in the club's season opener. The Bronx Bombers will turn to an old friend tonight, as Chien-Ming Wang returns to the hill to pitch the second contest of a three-game series versus the
Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
Coming off a 2008 season that saw the Yankees go 89-73 and miss the postseason for the first time since 1993, New York brought in the likes of CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett, who is set to make his Yankee debut in tomorrow's series finale.
However, Sabathia (0-1) was tagged for six runs on eight hits and five walks over 4 1/3 innings of Monday's 10-5 loss, a performance hardly worthy of the $161 million price tag he commanded during the offseason.
Teixeira wasn't much better. Signed to a $180 million deal over the winter, the first baseman went 0-for-4 with a walk and stranded five runners on base. A Maryland native, Teixeira was booed each time he stepped to the plate after spurning Baltimore's offseason advances in favor of New York.
The Yankees did get a two-run homer from Hideki Matsui as well as a solo blast from Jorge Posada in the loss. Derek Jeter added three hits, while Cody Ransom went hitless in three at-bats while starting at third in place of the injured Alex Rodriguez (hip surgery).
Perhaps the consistent right arm of Wang can get New York its first win of 2009. Wang entered last season off back-to-back 19-win campaigns and was 8-2 with a 4.07 earned run average in 15 starts in 2008 before suffering a right foot injury that ended his season in mid-June.
The 29-year-old sinkerball specialist is 3-1 with a save and a 5.13 ERA in nine career outings against Baltimore, eight of those starts.
Wang will take on a Baltimore offense that was sparked by Adam Jones, Cesar Izturis and Aubrey Huff on Monday. Jones reached base in all five of his plate appearances, posting three hits and a pair of walks while scoring three runs and driving in two.
Izturis hit a two-run homer and Huff added a three-run double. Nick Markakis also drove in a pair of runs in the win.
Jeremy Guthrie (1-0) pitched six innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and as many walks to earn the victory.
One of the few offseason pickups by the Orioles, 34-year-old Japanese import Koji Uehara will make his MLB debut tonight. An eight-time All-Star overseas, Uehara has a career record of 112-62 with a 3.01 ERA and has collected a pair of Sawamura Awards -- the Japanese equivalent to MLB's Cy Young.
He also earned the Nippon Professional Baseball version of the Rookie of the Year award and is unbeaten in international competition.
The Yankees were 11-7 against the O's in 2008, including a 5-4 mark in Baltimore.
