San Jose, CA (My Sportsbook) - Joe Pavelski scored the only goal in the shootout and Evgeni Nabokov earned his 47th career shutout, as the San Jose Sharks moved closer to their first Presidents' Trophy with a 1-0 victory over the
Colorado Avalanche at HP Pavilion.
Nabokov ended with 20 saves throughout 65 minutes of action and stopped all three Colorado shootout attempts to lead San Jose to its second straight win. The Sharks now have 117 points and lead both Detroit and Boston for the overall points lead in the NHL, which of course brings with it home-ice advantage throughout the upcoming postseason.
San Jose has two games remaining and a six-point lead over Detroit -- which has three games left -- for the West crown. Boston also has three games to go with 112 points.
"It's important for our team to get guys healthy and get them back," said Sharks head coach Todd McLellan. "I think it's evident when you see some of them come back that have been out quite a while."
Peter Budaj was stellar for the Avalanche and ended with 30 saves. Budaj recorded his seventh career shutout, but Colorado lost all four meetings this season to San Jose.
"We've played them good all year and haven't been rewarded for it," said Avalanche coach Tony Granato. "We've skated well and played some good games against them, but can't find ways to win."
After three scoreless periods, the contest went into overtime and the Sharks gained a power play when Michael Vernace was whistled for tripping midway through the extra session. Joe Thornton took his usual post on the power play atop the right circle. He attempted and set up several one-timers, but failed to light the lamp.
Later in overtime, Jeremy Roenick was alone in front for a redirection, but Budaj made a tremendous save.
The first shooter for either team was Pavelski, who fired home a wrist shot. Colorado's Wojtek Wolski, a hallowed shootout forward, failed to score on the visitors' first-round attempt.
Jonathan Cheechoo and Milan Hejduk both missed in the next round before Roenick failed to seal the win when he missed the net high and wide. The final shooter was Chris Stewart, who tried a double-deke move atop the crease but was stoned by Nabokov as the Sharks players came onto the ice and celebrated the win.
