Jurrjens, Braves keep Phils' bats silent for second game in a row

Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Jair Jurrjens kept the ball down through 5 2/3 scoreless frames, and Atlanta used a carbon copy effort to down the defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies, 4-0, in the second of three games at Citizens Bank Park.

Kelly Johnson hit a leadoff home run, Chipper Jones drove a solo shot out of the park to left and four relievers backed up Jurrjens' (1-0) outstanding effort to complete the shutout. The right-hander scattered four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

His counterpart Jamie Moyer (0-1), much like teammate Brett Myers a game earlier, was shaky early. Moyer gave up two first-inning runs and four total on eight hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks in five frames.

Ryan Howard and Chase Utley each finished with two hits, but the Phillies left 11 men on base and have scored just one run in their first two games.

"Hard to win games when you don't score. We needed two-out hits and didn't get any. We just missed pitches," surmised Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.

It was a little bit of history repeating in the top of the first, as the Braves put a two-spot on the scoreboard before the crowd could settle in.

Johnson hit a first-pitch, thigh-high fastball, with the help of the wind, deep into the right-field seats. Jones, also with the help of a swirling wind, drilled a pitch deep to center field that turned around Shane Victorino and crashed high against the padding for a two-base hit. Brian McCann's slow roller into the hole by second went under Utley's glove for an error, scoring Jones for the early 2-0 edge.

"That's the name of the game. You want to try and get the lead early and try to hold it throughout the game," said McCann. "Our pitching the last two games have been phenomenal."

After a period of calm, every ball the Braves hit seemed to find open grass in the fourth. Jeff Francoeur hit a soft fly that dropped in right before Casey Kotchman found a hole past a lunging Jimmy Rollins, setting up a first-and- third situation. Moyer retired the next two hitters to nearly escape the jam, if not for Johnson's cue-shot infield single to short that plated Francoeur for the three-run lead.

Jones' solo blast into the left-field seats built a 4-0 advantage one inning later. Just before stretch time, the Phillies had two runners on and two outs for the third time in the game. Matt Stairs was called on to pinch hit but his fly ball was chased down at the warning track in left-center.

The home-standing Phillies, who will receive their championship rings in the series finale Wednesday afternoon, didn't muster another threat from there.

Game Notes

Chan Ho Park, who was named the Phillies fifth starter before the season, will not start until Sunday so he pitched a perfect inning in relief Tuesday...Braves closer Mike Gonzalez pitched the ninth for the second straight game...Jones has three extra-base hits in the two games...After a successful major league debut, Atlanta outfielder Jordan Schafer finished 0- for-3 with a walk...The Phillies bullpen has retired 21 consecutive batters.
