Manchester, England (My Sportsbook) - FC Porto substitute Mariano Gonzalez scored in the 89th minute and the Portuguese champions escaped Old Trafford on Tuesday with a 2-2 tie against Manchester United in the first leg, quarterfinal Champions League match.
Gonzalez's goal was just four minutes after Manchester United substitute Carlos Tevez scored to put the English champions in front for the first time.
Cristian Rodriguez also scored for Porto, which took the lead four minutes into the game. Wayne Rooney scored United's first goal in the 15th minute.
FC Porto, which has never lost to an English club at home, hosts the defending Champions League winner in the second leg April 15. United, which extended its record Champions League unbeaten streak to 22 matches, will need a win or a tie of at least 2-2 to avoid being eliminated.
United's English rival Arsenal had a little better luck Tuesday, getting a goal from Emmanuel Adebayor in a 1-1 draw at Villarreal.
Porto, the heavy underdog, was impressive from the early stages of the opening leg and put United in a hole just minutes into the match.
Lisandro Lopez forced United goalie Edwin van der Saar to make a diving save at the right post just minutes into the match, but the Dutchman couldn't deny the next chance by Rodriguez.
United was trying to launch a quick counter attack when Cristiano Ronald turned the ball over in midfield. Porto didn't immediately take advantage, losing the ball into the area but was handed a second chance when Jonathan Evans failed to clear the ball.
Rodriguez got possession of the ball a few yards outside the penalty area and made a move to open space against Evans before picking out the bottom-left corner past a diving Van der Saar.
Porto continued to pressure, with Lopez again testing Van der Saar, who made a diving save.
United's first chance wasn't until the 14th minute when John O'Shea delivered a cross to Ronaldo, who headed low to the left but was denied by a diving save by Porto goalie Helton.
A minute later, though, Porto made its biggest mistake of the match when Bruno Alves made a no-look pass back to Helton, unaware Rooney had drifted back into the open space. The England striker quickly unwrapped the gift, and chipped the ball over Helton to tie the match.
Lopez again tested Van der Saar in the 18th, and Raul Meireles followed with a shot in the 20th that Van der Saar had to jump to tip over the crossbar. Off the ensuing corner kick, Rodriguez forced Van der Saar to make another diving stop.
Porto's Hulk had the next chance in the 30th, but his shot - headed toward the upper-left corner - was deflected just off target by Evans' knee.
United held off FC Porto for the remainder of the half and settled in after the break. Ji-Sung Park tested Helton in the 51st minute, but Sir Alex Ferguson's side started to struggle again, allowing a few more good chances for Porto.
Lopez unleashed a deflected shot that forced Van der Saar into another diving save in the 68th minute and second later Cissokho's 40-yard blast could only be punched away by the United goalie.
United finally started to threaten Porto more in the final 25 minutes, with two chances from Ronaldo and Rooney testing Helton. Ferguson, who brought in Ryan Giggs in the 59th, called on Tevez and Gary Neville in the 72nd and they played a part in the second goal.
Neville took the throw in from the right sideline and picked out Rooney on the edge of the area near the end line. Rooney, with his back to the goal, flicked the ball on with the side of his foot, and Tevez slid in at the near post and poked the ball into the upper-right corner in the 85th.
United's cushion was quickly erased, though, as Porto stunned the Old Trafford fans once again. A cross from the right sailed over United's defense and found Gonzalez on the far side. With just Van der Saar to beat, Gonzalez tapped the ball past the charging goalie in the 89th minute.
Manchester had one last chance to pick up a victory, but with Ronaldo and Giggs standing over a free kick from 20 yards deep into stoppage time, Giggs drilled a left-footed effort over the crossbar.
Porto also earned a draw at United the 2004 Champions League, when it won the event. Porto won the first leg that year 2-1 at home, then earned a draw on the road. This time, Porto takes two away goals to Estadio do Dragao stadium.
At Villarreal, Marcos Senna scored from 30 yards out in the 10th minute but the Gunners escaped with a draw - and a crucial away goal - when Adebayor struck in the second half.
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, who just returned over the weekend from a three- month absence, set up he goal with a long chip pass into the area. Adebayor was able to control the ball with his chest, then hit a shot past Diego Lopez. The second leg is set for April 15 at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
On Wednesday, Chelsea visits Liverpool and Bayern Munich visits Barcelona in the other two quarterfinal first-leg games. The second legs are April 14.
