(My Sportsbook) - Needless to say, it has been a franchise record-setting season for the Sharks. However, there is still one more club first yet to be had. San Jose aims to inch closer to the first Presidents' Trophy in team history tonight with a matchup against the
Colorado Avalanche at HP Pavilion.
The Sharks are leading the race for the top record in the NHL and home-ice advantage throughout the postseason with a franchise-best 115 points. That is three more than Boston with three games to play, though the Bruins have four games to go on their schedule.
San Jose is also four points up on Detroit for the top seed in the Western Conference. The Red Wings topped Buffalo on Monday and also have three games remaining, though they are idle until Thursday.
Another franchise milestone was reached by San Jose on Sunday as its 3-2 triumph over Anaheim was the Sharks' 52nd win of the season, a new club best. The team had set the previous high of 51 in 2006-07.
Jonathan Cheechoo netted the game-winner on the power play late in the third period -- extending San Jose's club record of consecutive games with a man- advantage tally to 11 contests -- and added an assist. Joe Pavelski also scored on the power play and Jeremy Roenick added an even-strength marker for the Sharks, who have won four of their last five.
Brian Boucher, making his first start since March 12, stopped 19-of-21 shots.
San Jose will play the first of back-to-back home games tonight, its final two games as the host this regular season. The Sharks' 32 home wins this year are a franchise record and they will also host Phoenix on Thursday before Saturday's season finale versus Los Angeles, giving the club a favorable schedule down the stretch.
Evgeni Nabokov, who should start in net tonight, is 3-0-0 versus the Avalanche this year, halting 95-of-99 shots for a 1.33 goals against average. San Jose will try to sweep a season series with the Colorado franchise for the first time in club history.
The Avs had lost eight straight on the season prior to Sunday's 4-1 win in Vancouver. T.J. Galiardi scored twice, while Ben Guite and Milan Hejduk also scored in helping the club end its longest skid since the Quebec Nordiques also lost eight in a row during the 1991-92 season.
Peter Budaj made 20 saves in the win, his club's first since March 14 in Edmonton.
Colorado also played its first game since leading scorer Ryan Smyth suffered a fractured right hand in last Wednesday's loss to Phoenix. It has been a season of injuries for the Avalanche, who have also seen Paul Stastny and Joe Sakic miss time this year among other skaters.
Colorado halted a four-gamer road skid on Sunday and is 14-24-2 as the visiting club this year. The Avalanche end the season on a three-game homestand.
