Toronto, ON (My Sportsbook) - Adam Lind went 4-for-5 with a home run and finished with six RBI and two runs scored, as the Toronto Blue Jays routed the Detroit Tigers, 12-5, in the season-opener for both clubs.

Travis Snider had a solo homer while Lyle Overbay drove in a pair of runs for the Blue Jays, who finished the 2008 campaign with an 86-76 overall mark, which was good enough for fourth place in the powerful AL East. Aaron Hill, Vernon Wells and Scott Rolen each drove in a run in the win.

Roy Halladay (1-0) got the win, going seven innings and giving up five runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Halladay, who was making his seventh straight Opening Day start, was 20-11 with a 2.78 ERA in an AL-high 246 innings pitched a year ago.

"It's really hard that first day," said Halladay. "To have guys go out there and hit the ball like that - it's nice."

Curtis Granderson had a solo homer and Brandon Inge offered a two-run blast for the Tigers, who lost their first seven games last year and were out of the playoff race by August, as the club became the most expensive last-place team in baseball history. Gerald Laird and Carlos Guillen drove in a run each in the setback.

Justin Verlander (0-1) was addled with the loss after giving up eight runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. After posting 35 wins between 2006-07, Verlander had a miserable 2008 campaign, going 11-17 while pitching to a dreadful 4.84 earned run average.

"Obviously I think I like my chances," said Verlander. "I've got a lot of stuff I've been working really hard at. I think you can see it transcend at the end of this."

Alex Rios started a two-out rally in the first with a walk and Wells followed with a double. Lind then offered a two-run single to right field and moved to second on Magglio Ordonez's fielding gaffe. Rolen was then hit by a pitch and Overbay made it 4-0 with a double to left.

The Tigers got a run back in the fourth, as Granderson led the inning off with a deep homer to right.

Snider belted a solo homer in the home fourth, Marco Scutaro followed with a triple and Hill donated a sac fly to left. Rios then clubbed a double and Wells worked a walk, as Eddie Bonine was summoned from the bullpen. Lind welcomed him to the game with a three-run blast, and the Blue Jays assumed a 9-1 advantage.

Detroit put more runs on the board in the seventh. Ordonez led off with a single and came around to score two batters later as Guillen doubled. Laird then offered an RBI single and Inge followed with a two-run homer to right, closing within 9-5.

Juan Rincon came in to pitch the eighth for Detroit and yielded a leadoff walk to Scutaro, a single to Hill and a walk to Rios to load the bases. Wells then hit a grounder to short, where Adam Everett botched the play allowing each runner to reach base safely. Lind followed with an RBI single and Rolen offered a sac fly to left, to give Toronto a 12-5 lead.

Game Notes

Halladay has dominated Detroit over his career, going 11-2 with a 1.93 ERA in 14 starts coming in to Monday's showdown...Toronto was 5-3 against the Tigers last season, including a 2-2 mark north of the border.
