Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - Hanley Ramirez hit the first grand slam of his career and finished the game with five RBI as the
Florida Marlins downed the
Washington Nationals, 12-6, on Opening Day.
Emilio Bonifacio went 4-for-5 with a two-run inside the park home run, three stolen bases and four runs scored, while Jorge Cantu belted a two-run home run. Jeremy Hermida added a solo shot for the Marlins, who went 84-77 last season to finish in third place in the NL East.
Ricky Nolasco (1-0), who won 15 games last season, got the win as he went six innings and gave up five runs -- four earned -- on six hits with six strikeouts.
Adam Dunn made a successful debut for the Nationals, who posted the worst record in the majors last season with a mark of 59-102. He went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, four RBI and two runs scored.
John Lannan (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he was charged with six runs on six hits in just three innings of work.
Florida jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Bonifacio led off with a single and then stole second. John Baker then punched a double into left field that was just out of the reach of Dunn. After Ramirez used a sacrifice bunt to move Baker to third, Cantu grounded out to shortstop to plate Baker.
In the third inning, the Marlins plated four more runners. A Ramirez run- scoring double was followed with a Cantu blast into the left field stands. After Dan Uggla lined out, Hermida launched a pitch into the right field seats for a 6-0 advantage.
RBI doubles from Dunn and Austin Kearns in the fourth inning got Washington on the board, but Bonifacio answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run, inside the park home run for an 8-2 lead.
Dunn slammed a pitch deep into the right field stands in the sixth inning to cut Washington's deficit to 8-5.
However, Florida responded in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead. Steven Shell relieved Wilfredo Ledezma and, with the bases loaded, the first batter he faced was Ramirez. On a 1-1 pitch, Ramirez roped a curveball over the left-center field wall for a 12-5 advantage.
"I was just trying to make contact with the ball and drive home some runs," said Ramirez. "I got a good pitch and was able to make a drive on it."
Jesus Flores' RBI single in the top of the ninth accounted for the final score.
