Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - University of Connecticut sophomore star Maya Moore captured the 2009 Naismith Award as women's college
basketball Player of the Year on Monday.
The two-time Big East Player of the Year beat out teammate Renee Montgomery, Louisville's Angel McCoughtry and Oklahoma's Courtney Paris for the honor.
Moore and Montgomery's Huskies are currently 38-0 and will be seeking the program's sixth national title and third undefeated campaign against McCoughtry's Cardinals in the National Championship game on Tuesday.
Moore, who set UConn's single-season scoring mark this season, comes into the title game averaging team-highs of 19.4 points and 8.9 rebounds while doling out 3.2 assists for the nearly untouchable Huskies.
She becomes the sixth women's player to win the Naismith Award in both high school and college, joining Diana Taurasi, Tamika Catchings, Chamique Holdsclaw, Candace Parker, and Lisa Leslie.
The Naismith award is given by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which is comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. Fan voting accounted for 25 percent of the final tally.
"We're honored to recognize Maya for what she has achieved both individually and with her team," said Gary Stokan, Atlanta Tipoff Club president. "Having watched her win a Naismith Trophy in high school it was no surprise that she would eventually claim one at the collegiate level."
Oklahoma's Blake Griffin, who is also a sophomore, captured the men's Naismith Award on Sunday.
