Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - Oklahoma's Blake Griffin received the Naismith Trophy Men's College Player of the Year award on Sunday. The sensational sophomore carried Oklahoma to a 30-6 record during the year, pulling down a nation's best 14.4 rebounds to go with 22.7 points per game while shooting 65.4 percent from the floor. His rebounding total, field goal percentage and 30 double-doubles set Big 12 Conference single-season records. "This is a tremendous honor for Blake, and a deserved one," said Oklahoma head coach Jeff Capel. "He was magnificent for us all season and everyone associated with our program is proud of what he's accomplished. Blake has dedicated himself to the game of basketball like no other player I've coached and the results speak for themselves. More impressive than his basketball ability, though, is his life approach and how he carries himself off the court. Blake is a much better person than he is a basketball player." Griffin led the Sooners to the Elite Eight, where they were bounced by the North Carolina Tar Heels, whose forward, Tyler Hansbrough, won the award last year. Hansbrough, along with Pittsburgh's DeJuan Blair and Connecticut's Hasheem Thabeet, were among the Naismith finalists. The award was given by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which is comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country. Fan voting accounted for 25 percent of the final tally.
