Heat never trail in beating Wizards

Washington, DC (My Sportsbook) - Dwyane Wade drained 15-of-17 free throws, on the way to 33 points, leading the Miami Heat to an important 118-104 win over the Washington Wizards, a victory that could go a long way in improving the team's playoff seeding.

Wade added eight assists and five rebounds for the Heat, who remain only percentage points behind Philadelphia for the fifth seed after the Sixers clinched a playoff berth with a win over Detroit Saturday. Miami, which hit a franchise-record eight three-pointers in the fourth quarter, clinched its playoff trip Friday after defeating Charlotte.

Jermaine O'Neal and Yakhouba Diawara each had 16 points in the win, while Michael Beasley and James Jones contributed 13 apiece for the Heat.

"Guys were shooting with confidence," Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said of the fourth-quarter barrage. "(Wade) and (Jones) got on a little bit of a roll there. That's what (Jones) is here to do: provide some defense and energy, veteran experience, and to make open threes."

Caron Butler had a team-high 27 points for the Wizards, who have been eliminated from playoff contention but will have an opportunity to take the season series from the NBA-leading Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. Washington is one of four teams (Lakers, Celtics, Magic) that have beaten the Cavs twice this season, losing only once in the three games.

Antawn Jamison scored 23 points for Washington, while Brendan Haywood provided 18 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

"(Haywood) missed the whole season, so anytime you can get some basketball play out there and get the cobwebs out, it definitely benefits you," Jamison said of his teammate's return from an almost season-long injury. "The most important thing to me was to get him healthy, and now he's healthy. After missing so many games, and for him to come out and do the things he's doing, it really says a lot."

Ahead by one early in the fourth, an 8-0 Miami burst, headed by two Jones three-pointers, gave the Heat a 91-82 edge 2 1/2 minutes into the period.

Beasley drained a three two minutes later for a 10-point edge, and a Wade shot from beyond the arc made it 102-88 with six minutes left. The game was never in doubt from there.

The Heat scored the first seven points of the game, but Washington fought back and trailed only 30-28 after the first quarter. Haywood had 10 points in the period.

A 9-0 Miami run early in the second gave the Heat a 39-30 edge, and the visitors pushed their cushion to 18 before leading 62-52 at halftime.

The Wizards started to chip away at the deficit in the third, and six straight points -- four from Haywood -- made it a two-point game, 70-68, with five minutes left. Washington trailed, 80-77, heading to the fourth.

Game Notes

Washington's Nick Young got tangled with Miami's Jamaal Magloire in the opening quarter and injured his left leg, failing to return to the game after being helped to the locker room...Miami played without Udonis Haslem, who injured his thumb in Friday's win over Charlotte...Gilbert Arenas (knee) sat out the game for Washington...Miami swept the season series, 4-0...Miami hit a season-high 14 three-pointers for the entire game.
