(My Sportsbook) - The bottom two teams in the Eastern Conference will face off on Long Island tonight, as the
New York Islanders welcome the
Tampa Bay Lightning for a battle at Nassau Coliseum.
The Islanders are last in the NHL with just 59 points on the year and Tampa Bay is 14th in the East with 65 points. Both clubs have been eliminated from playoff contention and have been relegated to a spoiler role.
New York has not fared well recently, losing three straight and six of their last seven contests. The Isles were in action Thursday against visiting Montreal and were handed a lopsided loss as Saku Koivu and Andrei Markov each tallied a goal and an assist to lift the Canadiens to a 5-1 decision at the Coliseum.
Jeff Tambellini scored the lone goal for the Islanders, while Yann Danis allowed all five goals on 38 shots in a losing effort.
New York, which is 16-16-6 as the host this year, will try to end a three-game home losing streak tonight.
The Lightning, meanwhile, are coming off Friday's close road loss in New Jersey. It was the fifth straight setback for Tampa, which hasn't performed well as a spoiler down the stretch.
Zach Parise's goal 1:21 into overtime lifted New Jersey over Tampa Bay, 5-4, at Prudential Center. On the game-winner, Travis Zajac took a lead pass from Paul Martin in the neutral zone and carried down the right wing, before faking a shot and dishing across to Parise, who hit a wide-open net.
Steven Stamkos, Ryan Malone, Evgeny Artyukhin and Martins Karsums tallied once each for the Lightning. Karri Ramo took the loss despite a 34-save performance.
In injury news, Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure on Friday to repair damaged cartilage in his right wrist. Lecavalier, who registered 29 goals and 38 assists in 77 games this year, will miss the remainder of the season and is expected to resume training in 4-to-6 weeks.
The Lightning, who have lost four straight on the road, are just 12-20-7 as the guest this season. Tampa is completing a three-game road trip tonight and will host its next two games against Pittsburgh and Washington.
The Islanders have taken two of three from Tampa this year and will try to seal the season series in the final meeting between the clubs tonight. New York has won five of seven overall in the series and the Bolts have dropped three in a row at the Coliseum.
