(My Sportsbook) - With a chance to clinch a second straight Southeast Division title, the Washington Capitals will host the playoff-hopeful
Buffalo Sabres tonight at the Verizon Center.
Washington has 101 points on the season, and with five games left in the regular season, it needs just one more point to secure the division crown. Carolina, which has four games left, is eight points behind the Capitals.
The Sabres are 10th in the East with 83 points on the year and are six points behind Montreal for the conference's eighth and final postseason berth. Buffalo has six games left in the regular season and will need some help if its going to avoid missing out on the playoffs for a second straight season.
The Capitals are 2-0 so far on a four-game homestand that will complete the team's regular-season home schedule. Washington, which is an impressive 28-9-2 as the host this year, has won three straight in D.C. after dropping its previous three home tests. The Caps will close out the regular season on a three-game road trip following Sunday's home finale against Atlanta.
Washington was last in action on Wednesday when it recorded a 5-3 decision against the visiting New York Islanders. Mike Green scored two power-play goals in the third period, and the Capitals rallied from a late deficit to capture a 5-3 win over the lowly Islanders.
With the win, the Capitals eclipsed the 100-point mark for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, when the team had 102 points. With five games remaining, the team will have an opportunity to top the team record of 107 points set during the 1985-86 campaign.
Green, with 30 goals on the season, became the eighth defenseman all-time to post a 30-goal season in his career. The last came back in 1992-93, as Kevin Hatcher scored 34 for the Capitals. The others are Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey, Doug Wilson, Denis Potvin and Phil Housley.
Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Keith Aucoin also scored for the Capitals. Jose Theodore notched his 30th win of the season with 24 saves.
Ovechkin is leading the NHL with 54 goals and is second in the league with 101 points. Both Ovechkin and Green come into tonight with six-game point streaks, while Backstrom has recorded a point in five straight.
The Sabres had a three-game winning streak halted in Wednesday's overtime loss in Atlanta, but Buffalo has still recorded at least a point in four straight games.
Ilya Kovalchuk scored the game-winner with 29.9 seconds left in overtime and added an assist in regulation as the Thrashers edged the Sabres, 3-2, at Philips Arena. With time running down in the extra period, Thomas Vanek's shot was blocked by Kovalchuk and the Thrashers star caught up to the puck and was able to beat Ryan Miller between the five-hole to give Atlanta the win.
Vanek had a pair of power-play goals for the Sabres, who were trying to build off a 4-3 shootout win at Montreal on Saturday. Miller made 27 saves for Buffalo.
Jason Pominville added an assist to extend his point streak to seven games. He has two goals and nine helpers during the run.
Buffalo, which is capping a three-game road trip tonight, is 15-17-6 as the road team this season and has just one win in its last nine games away from western New York. The Sabres will play their next two and three of their final five games on home ice.
Tonight marks the final meeting of the regular season between Washington and Buffalo. The Caps have won two of three against the Sabres this year, but Buffalo has taken seven of 10 overall in the series. The Sabres have also won seven of their last nine games in D.C.
