Raleigh, NC (My Sportsbook) - Chad LaRose tallied twice, including the game- winner late in the third period, as Carolina set a franchise record with its 10th consecutive home victory, topping the
New York Rangers, 4-2, at RBC Center.
Eric Staal and Rod Brind'Amour also scored for the Hurricanes, who have reeled off seven consecutive wins and surged past the Flyers and Penguins into fourth-place in the Eastern Conference with 93 points.
Cam Ward earned his 37th win of the year with 36 saves.
"We're just trying to get there. I'm not sure 93 is going to get you there," admitted Carolina head coach Paul Maurice. "There have been consistent things in all our games. Our goaltending has been very good. We've been better on special teams than we were earlier."
Dan Girardi and Corey Potter lit the lamp for the Rangers, who have lost three of four and fell to eighth spot in the East after Montreal topped the Islanders.
Henrik Lundqvist took the loss, allowing all four goals on 23 shots.
Carolina claimed victory thanks to a pair of goals less than 30 seconds apart late in regulation.
LaRose put the Hurricanes in front on a shot with 7:35 to play, then Brind'Amour's fluttering chance from near the blue line sailed past a screen and an unaware Lundqvist with 7:07 to go.
New York came up empty on the majority of a two-minute power-play with Ray Whitney off for hooking, but Lundqvist was pulled for an extra skater with 2:45 remaining toward the end of the advantage.
The effort proved fruitless, and the Hurricanes missed three chances to hit the empty net before the buzzer.
"We just didn't do the job," said Rangers head coach John Tortorella. "I thought for most of the night we worked hard and did a lot of good things, but when it comes down to a third period 2-2 those little things have to be done and we didn't do them. It cost us the game."
Staal's power-play blast from the left point gave Carolina the lead 4:28 into the contest, and the Rangers came up empty on four successive advantages from there.
Potter netted his first career goal with 2 1/2 minutes left in the period, and the 'Canes didn't convert on either portion of their power play, which bridged the end of the first and start of the second period.
Carolina did forge ahead at 6:32 when Staal sent a lead pass to Whitney for a backhander which LaRose poked in from the side of the net, but Girardi pumped home a wrister with 5:39 to play in the period for a 2-2 deadlock.
