Los Angeles, CA (My Sportsbook) - Brendan Morrison scored two power-play goals and Marty Turco was strong with 26 saves, as the
Dallas Stars halted their seven-game winless skid and kept their dim playoff hopes alive with a 3-2 win over the
Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center.
Mike Ribeiro also scored for the Stars, who have five games remaining and sit six points out of the final playoff position. Steve Ott added two assists in the victory.
Dallas needs to pass three other teams -- St. Louis, Minnesota, Edmonton -- and catch either Nashville or Anaheim to qualify for the postseason. One year removed from reaching the Western Conference finals, the Stars are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since the spring of 2002.
"A win is a win," said Stars head coach Dave Tippett. "We did a lot of good things tonight. We played well with the puck."
Jack Johnson and Anze Kopitar scored for the Kings, who are 1-4-1 in their last six games overall but are still mathematically alive for a possible playoff berth. The Kings, with 73 points and six games to play, for all intents and purposes need to win every game left on their schedule to gain a postseason berth.
Jonathan Quick allowed three goals on 35 shots in the loss.
After Ribeiro's 21st goal at the 14:49 mark of the first period opened the scoring, the Kings knotted the contest shortly after with 2:02 remaining when Johnson's slap shot from along the right half-wall slipped past Turco.
Morrison's pair of power-play tallies in the middle stanza put the Stars in control.
First, at 1:55, Morrison's 15th marker of the season gave Dallas a 2-1 lead. With Kyle Calder in the penalty box for holding, Mike Modano held control along the goal line to the right of the net. Modano fired a pass across the goal mouth and Morrison redirected it home from near the left post.
"Modano made a pass, and it was a world-class pass and a good finish at the back door," said LA's Dustin Brown.
In the latter stages of the period, Morrison struck again while Raitis Ivanans was off for roughing. Morrison held control inside the left circle and released a blazing slap shot that landed just inside the far post with 4:41 to play before the second intermission.
Kopitar brought the Kings within one with 1:31 to play in regulation, but Turco and the Stars defense corps used several clears to hold on for the one- goal victory.
"Even though we gave up a bad goal at the end, we were able to get (the win), and that's a positive sign," Tippett added.
