Clearwater, FL (My Sportsbook) - Marcus Giles' bid to return to the majors took a hit on Monday, as he was released by the Philadelphia Phillies. The second baseman signed a minor league contract with Philadelphia early in the offseason after sitting out the 2008 campaign following his release from Colorado in spring training. Giles hasn't played in the majors since 2007, when he hit .229 with four homers and 39 runs batted in over 116 games with San Diego. Giles, who hit just .167 over the spring with the Phillies, spent his first six seasons in Atlanta and was an All-Star in 2003, the year he established career-bests with a .316 average, 21 homers and 69 RBI. The 30-year-old veteran has hit .277 over his career with 76 homers and 333 RBI in 792 games. Philadelphia also optioned outfielder John Mayberry Jr. and pitcher Carlos Carrasco to minor league camp.
