Trenton, NJ (My Sportsbook) - Tiffany Hayes exploded for a career-high 28 points, as the top-seeded Connecticut Huskies continued their run at perfection with a 77-53 decision over the fourth-seeded California Golden Bears in Sweet 16 action of the NCAA Tournament at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
Hayes, who is a freshman, shot 9-of-10 from the field and also collected seven assists and five rebounds for Connecticut (36-0), which will take on the Arizona State Sun Devils on Tuesday night for the right to play in the Final Four.
Maya Moore added 22 points, while Renee Montgomery contributed 13 points for the Huskies, who are now 68-15 all-time in NCAA Tournament action.
Ashley Walker scored 21 points and collected seven caroms for Cal (27-8), while Alexis Gray-Lawson and Natasha Vital chipped in 10 points apiece. Gray- Lawson also dished out five assists, while Devanei Hampton pulled down a game- high 11 boards.
Surprisingly the Golden Bears led by as many as eight points in the opening half, but the Huskies fought back and went into the break with a 35-33 advantage, despite shooting just 35.9 percent through the first 20 minutes of play.
UConn returned to form in the second stanza however, as the Huskies used a 23-5 run to put distance between them and the Golden Bears. UConn shot a sizzling 58.3 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes, but also limited Cal to an ice cold 20.7 percent shooting display, en route to the 24- point victory.
The Huskies scored 18 points off 16 Cal turnovers, while the Golden Bears tallied just four points off seven Connecticut miscues.
The Huskies are now 36-0 on the year, and are still on pace to duplicate the program's amazing 2001-02 campaign in which Connecticut finished with a perfect 39-0 ledger.
