Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - Slava Kozlov and Tobias Enstrom both registered a goal and two assists, as the
Atlanta Thrashers doubled up the
Ottawa Senators, 6-3, at Philips Arena.
Ilya Kovalchuk scored a goal and picked up a helper for the Thrashers, who have won nine of their last 12 outings. Eric Perrin and Todd White each collected two assists, while Johan Hedberg made 18 saves to notch his 100th career win.
"I'm not a big statistics guy," Hedberg said of the milestone. "It almost took 10 years, but it's nice to have it."
Jason Spezza registered two goals and an assist for Ottawa, which has lost two straight on the heels of five-game win streak. Ryan Shannon posted a goal and a helper in the setback.
Alex Auld replaced Brian Elliott in the second period after the rookie netminder was beaten four times on 21 shots. Auld made nine saves the rest of the way.
A Stanley Cup finalist two years ago, Ottawa is in danger of missing the postseason for the first time since 1996. The 12th-seeded Senators are 12 points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with eight games remaining.
"It's definitely been tough," Auld said of the 2008-09 campaign. "There been a lot of positive signs. In the last couple of months, we've been playing a lot better."
Ottawa grabbed a 1-0 lead on the power play. Nick Foligno stole the puck from Hedberg behind the Atlanta net and quickly feed Spezza, who fired it into the yawning cage at 2:13 of the first period.
Nathan Oystrick knotted the score at 7:56, but Spezza countered for the visitors with 8:59 remaining in the opening frame. Kovalchuk, though, pumped in his 40th of the season, ripping a shot past the glove of Elliott with 9.7 seconds remaining in the first.
It's the fifth straight season Kovalchuk has reached the 40-goal plateau.
Atlanta blew the game open with three goals in a span of 2:58.
While on the power play, Enstrom walked the blueline and fired a wrist shot that made its way through a mass of humanity with 6:48 remaining in the middle stanza. Marty Reasoner lit the lamp a minute later to chase Elliott from the crease.
Colby Armstrong then scored on a backhand -- the first shot Auld faced -- to cap the outburst with 3:50 to play.
Shannon and Kozlov traded power-play goals in the third period.
