Cap Cana, Dominican Republic (My Sportsbook) - Mark O'Meara fired a seven- under 65 Saturday to jump into a three-way tied for the lead after two rounds of The Cap Cana Championship.
O'Meara completed 36 holes at eight-under-par 136 and shares the lead with Keith Fergus (68) and Eduardo Romero (68).
Gene Jones posted a six-under 66 to climb into a tie for fourth at minus-six. He was joined there by Joey Sindelar (68), Mark McNulty (68), Bruce Vaughan (67) and Tim Simpson (70).
O'Meara wrapped birdies at two and four around a bogey at the third. His birdie on the fifth moved him to three-under, and he climbed to minus-five with birdies on nine and 11.
At the par-five 12th on the Jack Nicklaus Course at Punta Espada Golf Club, O'Meara pitched his third to six feet and rolled that in for birdie to get within three of the lead.
O'Meara left himself eight feet for birdie on 14 and made that to close the gap. He made it two in a row as he two-putted for birdie on 15. O'Meara parred his final three holes to be the first in the clubhouse at minus-eight.
"Obviously, it was a disappointing finish yesterday because I played really well. Just to finish that way left a little bit of a bad taste," said O'Meara, who played the final two holes in plus-three in the first round.
"Today, I got out there and hit some good shots, drove it well and made a couple of good birdies. I hit some really good shots on the back side and weathered the storm out there."
Fergus ran off five straight birdies from the fifth to jump to minus-nine, giving him a two-shot lead.
After stumbling out of the lead with bogeys on 13 and 14, Fergus regained the lead as he drained three straight birdies from the 15th.
However, Fergus found sand with his approach to the last and made a double- bogey, which dropped him back into a share of the lead.
Romero, who was playing in the final group, made the turn at seven-under with birdies on two, eight and nine. He trailed by two at that point.
The Argentine bogeyed the 10th, but atoned for that mistake with a three-foot birdie putt on 12. Romero dropped another stroke on 13. At the par-five 15th, Romero drained a 20-footer for eagle to jump into a share of the lead at minus-eight.
Romero parred 16 and 17 to remain at minus-eight. He had a birdie putt from just outside 10 feet at the last to take the lead, but came up short and left of the hole.
Craig Stadler, who shared third at this tournament last year, posted a three- under 69 to move to five-under-par 139. He was joined there by Don Pooley (67) and Andy Bean (68). Fulton Allem, Jay Haas and Gil Morgan are one stroke back at minus-four.
First-round leader David Eger stumbled to a three-over 75 to slide into a share of 21st at two-under-par 142.
Greg Norman carded three bogeys and three birdies in an even-par round of 72 that left him tied for 43rd at plus-one.
