Eugene, OR (My Sportsbook) - The University of Oregon turned to a hoops journeyman as its next women's head basketball coach, naming Paul Westhead to the post on Thursday. The 70-year-old Westhead, known for an up-tempo style of play with his teams from the past, replaces Bev Smith, whose contract was not renewed. Westhead has a basketball resume that spans nearly four decades. He started as the head men's coach at La Salle in 1970 and led the Explorers to one NIT and two NCAA tournament appearances in nine seasons. He also has coached in the NBA with the Lakers, Bulls and Nuggets, and most recently was the head coach of the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury (2005-07). Westhead comes to Oregon after serving as an assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder for one year (2007-08). He won the WNBA championship with the Mercury in 2007 and the NBA championship with the Lakers in 1980. Smith recently completed her eighth year as the Ducks' head coach, compiling a 123-121 overall record, including a 9-21 mark this season.
