Flyers aim for first win in Detroit in over 20 years

(My Sportsbook) - After getting an important road trip off to an undesired start, the Philadelphia Flyers will attempt to rebound in a place where they haven't tasted victory in more than 20 years.

Philadelphia gets a chance to end its extensive winless drought in the city of Detroit in tonight's showdown with the Western Conference-leading Red Wings.

The Flyers are 0-13 with a pair of ties since their last regular-season triumph in Joe Louis Arena, back on November 4, 1988. That's the longest active winless streak of any NHL team on the road against a particular opponent.

Philadelphia also lost twice in Detroit while being swept by the Red Wings in the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals.

The Flyers find themselves looking over their shoulder in the standings as well, as the club's lead over hard-charging Pittsburgh for the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race dwindled to just two points following Sunday's 4-1 loss to the rival New York Rangers. The Penguins closed the gap with a 6-4 victory over Boston on Sunday.

Philadelphia had won three of its four most recent tilts prior to Sunday's setback, which came one day after the team defeated the Rangers at home by a 4-2 score.

Simon Gagne scored the Flyers' only goal on Sunday, with Mike Richards recording an assist on the tally. Both players are riding seven-game scoring streaks in which each has compiled three goals and six assists.

The loss came in the opener of a four-game trek that will conclude with a crucial clash at Pittsburgh on Sunday. Philadelphia sports a 16-11-6 road record for the year.

Detroit returns home off a record-setting victory at Columbus on Sunday. The 4-0 win over the Blue Jackets put the Red Wings over the 100-point mark for the ninth consecutive season, shattering a league mark they had shared with the Montreal Canadiens (1974-82). The defending Stanley Cup champions also remained a point ahead of San Jose for the top spot in the Western Conference.

Chris Osgood led the way in Sunday's game, which clinched a playoff spot for Detroit, by stopping all 23 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season. Marian Hossa, Niklas Kronwall, Mikael Samuelsson and Johan Franzen all had goals to help the Red Wings to their second straight win and third in the last four outings.

Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg both had assists on the night to extend their personal point streaks to five games. Datsyuk has two goals and six assists during his run, while Zetterberg has three goals and a pair of helpers over that span.

These teams will be meeting for the first time since February 12, 2007, when the Flyers skated to a 6-1 rout in Philadelphia.
