Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - The unbeaten Connecticut Huskies along with Duke, Maryland and Oklahoma earned No. 1 seeds for the 2009 women's NCAA Tournament, while Tennessee gained its lowest seed ever for the event.
Tennessee (22-10), coming off back-to-back national championships, was seeded fifth in the Berkeley Region and will play MAC champion Ball State in the first round. This is the lowest seed ever for the Lady Vols, who have been in the tournament every year since it started in 1982, earning a No. 1 seed 19 times.
Lady Vols head coach Pat Summitt, owner of a record eight national titles, became the first Division I head coach to win 1,000 games on February 5 when the Lady Vols beat Georgia. The 56-year-old Summitt, in her 35th year coaching the Lady Vols, now has the task of keeping an amazing streak alive, as Tennessee has never missed making it to the Sweet 16, garnering 27 straight appearances in the round. The Lady Vols have been to the Final Four 18 times.
UConn was given the top spot in the Trenton Region and will host America East champion Vermont in the first round. The Big East champion Huskies (33-0) have put up staggering numbers this year, most notably beating opponents by an average of 31.5 points, including 31.3-point differential against ranked teams. UConn entered the tourney unbeaten in 1995 and 2002, and walked away as national champions both seasons.
Maryland (28-4), which beat Duke to capture the ACC tourney crown, is the top seed in the Raleigh region and will play Ivy League champion Dartmouth in the first round.
Duke (26-5), which has made the Sweet 16 for the last 11 years, was given the top seed in the Berkeley Region and will face Ohio Valley Conference champs Austin Peay in the first round. The Blue Devils were runners up in 2006 when they lost in overtime to Maryland.
Oklahoma (29-4), losers to Texas A&M in the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament, gained the No. 1 seed in the Oklahoma City Region and will play SWAC champion Prairie View in the first round.
The women's Final Four will be held in St. Louis on Sunday, April 5 with the championship game taking place two nights later.
