Fort Myers, FL (My Sportsbook) - The Boston Red Sox and pitcher Jon Lester have agreed to terms on a five-year contract with a club option for 2014. Financial terms were not disclosed, but reports last week indicated it to be worth $30 million for the five years and $13 million for the option year. Lester enjoyed a breakout season in 2008, establishing himself as one of the elite pitchers in the American League. In a career-high 33 starts, he posted a record of 16-6 with a 3.21 earned run average. The 25-year-old Tacoma, Washington native joined Babe Ruth (1916) and Lefty Grove (1937) as the only Boston lefties with as many as 15 wins, 30 starts, 200 innings, 150 strikeouts and a sub-3.50 ERA in a single season. In addition, Lester also threw his first no-hitter against Kansas City, becoming the first Boston southpaw to do so since Mel Parnell in 1956. Lester is well-known for his bout with lymphoma cancer during the 2006 and 2007 seasons, finishing off his 2007 campaign with the World Series-clinching win in Game 4 over the Colorado Rockies. For his career, Lester has a regular season record of 27-8 with a 3.81 ERA. He is also 2-2 in seven career postseason appearances, including five starts, with a 2.25 ERA. His 1.95 ERA as a starter in the postseason is the third- lowest in club history.
