Valencia, CA (My Sportsbook) - Joey Sindelar managed just a two-under 70 on Saturday, but it was enough for him to remain atop the leaderboard after two rounds of the AT&T Champions Classic.
Sindelar, who will go for his first Champions Tour win on Sunday, completed 36 holes at 10-under-par 134 to lead by a single stroke.
Don Pooley, who hasn't won on tour since 2003, fired a seven-under 65 to jump into second place at minus-nine.
Jay Haas is alone in third at eight-under-par 136 after posting a three-under 69 Saturday. Steve Thomas carded six-under 66 and is one stroke back at minus- seven.
Sindelar did not have it easy on Saturday. He parred four straight before tripping to a bogey on the par-four fifth at Valencia Country Club. That was his first bogey of the week.
After two pars, Sindelar dropped another stroke on the eighth. He recovered that lost stroke with a birdie on the par-five ninth, but gave that shot right back as he bogeyed No. 10.
Sindelar, who turns 51 at the end of the month, caught fire from there to regain the lead. He dropped in back-to-back birdie efforts from the 12th to move to eight-under.
Pooley, who played five groups ahead of Sindelar, was in the lead at that point at minus-nine.
Sindelar, who shared second place last week, birdied the par-five 15th to gain a piece of the lead. He made it two in a row with a birdie at 16 to reclaim the lead at 10-under. Sindelar parred the last two holes to secure his first 36-hole lead on the Champions Tour.
Pooley started the day six strokes off the pace. He birdied the first, then parred his next six holes. He birdied the eighth and made it two in a row as he also birdied the ninth to make the turn in five-under.
Around the turn, Pooley matched Sindelar's birdies. Pooley birdied 12 and 13, then 15 and 16 to fly into the lead at minus-five. Sindelar did pass him as Pooley parred the final two holes.
Bruce Lietzke (70) and Tim Simpson (69) share fifth place at six-under-par 138. Dan Forsman, Jeff Sluman, Ken Green, Robert Thompson and Tom McKnight are one shot back at minus-five
Defending champion Denis Watson posted a two-under 70 Saturday to move to plus-one, where he is now tied for 42nd place.
