(My Sportsbook) - Hoping to continue their turnaround on the road, the
New York Rangers will aim to extend their recent success in Philadelphia with today's contest versus the Flyers at the Wachovia Center that begins a home- and-home series.
The Rangers halted a nine-game road losing streak -- the franchise's longest such skid since 1965 -- with a win over the New York Islanders last Thursday. After a home win against Boston, New York fell back into the loss column in Carolina on Monday, but rebounded in the middle portion of a three-game road trip with Thursday's 4-2 victory in Nashville.
Scott Gomez had a goal and two assists to lead the Rangers, while Marc Staal and Fredrik Sjostrom each had a goal. Sean Avery, meanwhile, lit the lamp for the first time in four games since rejoining New York last week.
New York, which is now 15-15-4 on the road, is currently tied with the Hurricanes for the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference with 78 points each. Both clubs trail sixth-seeded Pittsburgh by one point.
Henrik Lundqvist stopped 19 shots for the Rangers, who have won four of their last five games. With the victory, Lundqvist became the first goaltender in NHL history to win 30 games in each of his first four seasons.
Lundqvist is just 8-4-2 with a 3.21 goals against average in his career against the Flyers, but will try to lead his club to its ninth win in its last 10 trips to Philadelphia.
New York notched a 4-3 win in the City of Brotherly Love on October 11, but then dropped a home test to the Flyers on February 15. Still, the Rangers have won eight of their last 12 overall against the Flyers.
The Blueshirts will host their Atlantic Division rivals on Sunday to complete this home-and-home set.
The Flyers will close out a five-game homestand with this afternoon's contest. Philly has split the first four games of the stand and had a two-game win streak end with Thursday's 2-1 loss to Washington.
Mike Knuble scored for the Flyers and Martin Biron was strong in net with 28 stops. Biron could get his fourth straight start today and is 10-6-3 with a pair of ties and a 2.49 GAA lifetime versus the Rangers.
Simon Gagne notched an assist for a fifth straight game and also has two goals in that span. Mike Richards also posted a helper to give him two goals and five assists over a five-game point streak of his own.
Daniel Briere skated versus the Capitals, returning from a two-game absence due to a persistent groin injury that has limited him to just 13 games this year. Briere has five goals and four assists this year and 13 goals and 14 helpers in 27 career games versus the Rangers.
Philadelphia trails first-place New Jersey by nine points in the Atlantic Division and is seeded fourth in the East, two points ahead of Montreal.
The Flyers are 20-10-4 at home this year and Sunday's game in New York begins a four-game road trip.
