Baylor shocks Kansas in Big 12 quarterfinals

Oklahoma City, OK (My Sportsbook) - LaceDarius Dunn scored 24 points and Kevin Rogers added 14, as Baylor pulled off a 71-64 upset of 11th-ranked Kansas in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament at the Ford Center.

Baylor (19-13), which had won just two of its last 12 conference games to conclude the regular season, beat Nebraska in the first round on Wednesday and will face Texas in Friday's semifinals. The Longhorns advanced with a 61-58 win over Kansas State.

Kansas (25-7) became just the second top seed to lose its opening game in the Big 12 Tournament, joining Iowa State in 2001. The Bears, coincidentally, also beat the Cyclones eight years ago on the way to their only Big 12 semifinal appearance.

"Our guys showed a lot of heart," said Baylor head coach Scott Drew. "They knew coming into this we are going to have to leave it all on the line and really come together as a team. I couldn't be more proud of the effort."

Sherron Collins scored 16 points for the Jayhawks, who had won the past three Big 12 Tournament titles.

"The biggest reason we played poorly was because Baylor played good," said Kansas head coach Bill Self. "The bottom line is they were better than us today."

Kansas trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half, then whittled it down to four at halftime and scored the first four points of the second half to tie it at 37-37.

Dunn countered with a three-pointer to put Baylor back in front, but Kansas finally took its first lead since it was 1-0 on a three-pointer by Tyrel Reed with 9:41 to play. The bucket gave the Jayhawks a 54-51 edge and Markieff Morris followed with a putback off a missed Reed three-point attempt to extend the margin to five.

After the teams traded baskets to keep it a five-point game, Dunn drilled a pair of three-pointers and scored eight points as part of a 12-0 Baylor run. His second trey of the surge gave the Bears a 65-58 lead with just over 3 1/2 minutes remaining.

"We know how to guard Dunn and we did not guard him the way he should be defended," Self stated. "We let him get comfortable."

Reed and Collins responded with three-pointers for Kansas to trim the deficit to one, but the Jayhawks failed to score again.

Collins had a shot blocked by Mamadou Diene on Kansas' next trip and Rogers buried a jumper to give Baylor a three-point edge with just under 90 seconds to play.

The Jayhawks came up empty on their next two possessions, both missed shots by Collins. The latter was a three-point try with 28 seconds left.

Henry Dugat canned a pair from the stripe with 20 seconds remaining and the Jayhawks turned it over on their next trip before Tweety Carter's layup in the closing seconds sealed it.

"We got down five," Drew remarked. "We could have easily packed it in at that time. We didn't."

Dugat scored six for Baylor, while Curtis Jerrells chipped in 10. Diene had nine points with five blocks in the victory.

Tyshawn Taylor and Marcus Morris each scored 12 for Kansas, while Cole Aldrich contributed eight points with 14 rebounds.

"We let this one slip away from us," said Taylor. "We started off bad and they played well early. We had to fight back the whole game."

Baylor raced out to a 14-5 lead just five minutes into the game and built a 30-13 advantage with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half. Kansas, though, stormed back with the next nine points as part of a 20-7 run and trailed just 37-33 at the break.

Game Notes

Kansas last failed to reach the Big 12 semifinals in 2000...The Jayhawks had won seven straight against Baylor...Each team finished 8-of-25 from three- point range...Reed scored six points for Kansas...Collins made only 6-of-20 shots and was 4-of-12 from beyond the arc.
