Tampa, FL (My Sportsbook) -
New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez underwent successful arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip on Monday.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Marc Philippon at Vail Valley Surgery Center in Colorado. Also addressed during the one-hour, 20-minute surgery was cartilage from a paralabral cyst that had dated back to last season.
The projected timetable for recovery remains six-to-nine weeks, meaning Rodriguez should be back on the field sometime in May.
The team had initially decided against surgery, instead choosing rest and rehab. However, it was revealed Sunday that Rodriguez opted to have surgery.
Rodriguez had less invasive surgery to repair the labrum. After his rehab is completed, he will return to play and then have a full repair after the season. The initial surgery fixed the labrum, while the second will repair the bone deformity.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi suggested that several players could be used to replace Rodriguez in the interim, including Cody Ransom and Angel Berroa.
Rodriguez, who recently admitted to using steroids while a member of the Texas Rangers from 2001-03, had been set to play for the Dominican Republic during the World Baseball Classic.
For his career, "A-Rod" is a .306 hitter with 553 home runs and 1,606 runs batted in. Over parts of 15 seasons with New York, Seattle and Texas, the 33- year-old Rodriguez has recorded 2,404 hits in 2,042 games.
