(My Sportsbook) - After beginning their longest road trip of the season with two impressive wins, the
Calgary Flames were blown out Friday evening in Carolina. The Flames will try to rebound with a win when they visit the
Atlanta Thrashers for this afternoon's meeting at Philips Arena.
Calgary began a seven-game trek with Tuesday's 6-3 win in Ottawa and two days later pounded Philadelphia, 5-1. The Flames used a pair of goals from Olli Jokinen, who was acquired in a trade with Phoenix on Wednesday, to defeat the Flyers.
However, Calgary, which leads the Northwest Division by eight points over Vancouver, was handed a 6-1 beating Friday night in Raleigh as Ray Whitney notched the third hat trick of his career to lead the Hurricanes.
Jarome Iginla scored the lone goal while Curtis McElhinney was lit up for six goals on 33 shots for the Flames.
The Flames, who had won six straight road games prior to Friday's setback, are 17-12-2 as the guest this season.
Atlanta has won two of its last three games and is coming off Friday's shutout win over Montreal. Kari Lehtonen recorded his second shutout on the year behind 25 saves, and the Thrashers logged a 2-0 decision against the visiting Canadiens.
Bryan Little's power-play goal late in the first was all Atlanta needed, but Rich Peverley added an empty-net marker late in the third period to seal the victory.
Ilya Kovalchuk collected assists on both goals, giving him five goals and six assists over a six-game point streak. The sniper also has 24 points (14 goals, 10 assists) over his last 12 games.
It was Lehtonen's 13th career whitewashing and helped the Thrashers move to 2-1-0 on a four-game homestand that ends today. Atlanta is 12-18-2 at Philips Arena this year.
The Thrashers notched a 6-4 win in Atlanta when these clubs met on March 13 of last season, but Calgary has still taken three of the last five encounters.
