Frolik leads Panthers past Thrashers

Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - Michael Frolik scored twice to lead the Florida Panthers in a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.

Cory Stillman collected a goal and an assist and Stephen Weiss helped set up three scores as Florida followed a big win over Southeast Division-leading Washington on Sunday with its third win in the last four. Richard Zednik also scored for the Panthers, who finished off a five-game road trip at 3-2.

Tomas Vokoun earned the win with 27 saves in his return, after sitting out four games with an ear infection.

The surging Panthers are trying to make the postseason for the first time since 1999-2000 and just finished off an 8-5-0 February prior to their triumph over the Caps.

"It's not the prettiest 60 minutes we played but they don't ask that at the end of the year. They just tally them up," Weiss said. "We knew they were a dangerous team coming in and we just stuck with it. It was a nice two points for us."

Ilya Kovalchuk, Colby Armstrong and Jim Slater lit the lamp for Atlanta, which has dropped four of its last six games. Kari Lehtonen finished the game with 30 saves.

"We messed up a few times but the goals scored on us were because the forwards didn't pick up the lead (guy) coming in," Atlanta head coach John Anderson said.

Armstrong's rebound tally 2:19 into the contest got the Thrashers on the scoreboard, but Frolik pounced on a loose puck that had trickled in behind Lehtonen less than two minutes later, tying the game.

Atlanta jumped back in front at 6:38 on a Slater rebound score, after Chris Thorburn tried a wraparound attempt.

Frolik's backhander 2:41 into the middle stanza allowed Florida to pull even again, and the Panthers scratched out their first lead with 5:09 left in the frame.

Karlis Skrastins took a pass from Weiss coming down the left wing and skated behind the net, drawing Lehtonen out of the crease, before sending a pass between the goaltender and the post to Stillman for an easy score in front.

Zednik then took advantage of an opportune bounce and buried the puck into the back of an open net with 49.7 ticks on the clock, after the disc deflected out toward the right circle from a scrum in front.

Kovalchuk crashed the net and cleaned up a loose puck in the crease for his 35th goal this season with just under three minutes to play, bringing the Thrashers within 4-3.

However, a Rich Peverley delay of game call for putting the puck over the boards 35 seconds later had Atlanta spending a majority of its remaining time killing off a penalty, and it couldn't solve Vokoun in the waning moments.

Game Notes

Florida improved to 16-15-3 as the guest this year and returns home for its next two games, beginning with Thursday's test against Pittsburgh... The Thrashers moved to 1-1 on their four-game homestand and are just 11-18-2 as the host this season...Florida has taken three of four from the Thrashers this season and recorded an 8-4 home victory the last time the clubs met, on January 10...The Panthers have won four of five in the series overall, but have lost 12 of the last 16 meetings in Atlanta...Erik Christensen had two helpers for the Thrashers...It was Frolik's second multi-point effort this season.
