Ogilvy among the semifinalists at WGC

Marana, AZ (My Sportsbook) - Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 winner, handled teenager Rory McIlroy, 2&1, Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.

Ogilvy will meet last year's second-place finisher, Stewart Cink Saturday afternoon. Cink defeated three-time major winner Ernie Els, 2&1 in the quarterfinals.

Saturday's second semifinal will feature Paul Casey of England, a 4&3 winner over Sean O'Hair, who was suffering from food poisoning, and the unlikeliest semifinalist.

Ross Fisher, who is participating in this event for the first time, toppled one of last year's semifinalists, Justin Leonard, 2&1.

The first player to get into the semifinals is the most experienced in this championship.

Ogilvy, ranked second in the Bobby Jones bracket, and McIlroy, No. 4, were all-square through 10 holes, but it was at 11 where Ogilvy took the lead. At the par-five hole, McIlroy drove way left into the dessert and dropped the hole with a bogey.

At the very next hole, Ogilvy sank a 10-footer for birdie to win that and move 2-up. McIlroy cut into the deficit with a birdie at the par-five 13th, but Ogilvy reclaimed his 2-up cushion with a birdie at 15.

Ogilvy sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the 16th to put the pressure on McIlroy, who had seven feet to halve the hole and extend the match. The 19-year-old did just that and it was off to 17.

Ogilvy hit his approach at 17 15 feet past the stick. McIlroy knocked his second to eight feet, but he wouldn't need the putter. The 2006 U.S. Open champion converted his birdie effort to close out the match.

Couple his win in 2006 and his runner-up finish in 2007 with his run this year and Ogilvy has opened up and impressive record of 14-2 in this event.

"I like the hole-by-hole thing," said Ogilvy. "You play one hole, you forget the last one. You get on, just you and the guy. Something about the format suits me, I don't know. I just enjoy it."

Ogilvy will meet last year's runner-up to Tiger Woods, Cink.

The sixth seed in the Ben Hogan bracket, Cink knocked off Phil Mickelson on Friday to set up his meeting with No. 4, Els.

Cink established a 2-up lead early, but a par from Els at six was enough to win and cut the gap to 1-down. Cink got back to 2-up with a win at 11 when Els couldn't make a par.

Els rolled in a big 12-foot birdie putt just to halve the 13th, but couldn't hole a birdie putt at 15 to match Cink's. Els was 3-down with three to play and got one back with a conceded birdie at No. 16.

Cink elected to hit a three-wood off the 17th tee and found the short grass. He would leave himself a long second shot into the putting surface, but the decision looked good after Els drove into a fairway bunker.

Cink hit a great approach to 15 feet and Els could do no better than a greenside bunker. Els blasted out to 10 feet, then watched Cink lag his birdie putt to concession range, ending Els' best run in the event since 2001.

Casey, the No. 6 seed in the Gary Player side, never let O'Hair breathe on Saturday. The Englishman won the first two holes with a birdie and an eagle, then O'Hair started giving holes away. O'Hair lost the fourth, fifth and seventh holes to fall 5-down.

O'Hair, the No. 12 in the bracket, made a double-bogey at the 10th to move 6- down with eight to play. He got one back with a birdie at 11, but lost the 12th to be 6-down with six to go.

O'Hair needed to win every hole on the way in and could not. He made it interesting with wins at the 13th and 14th, but was still 4-down with four to play.

In the final match, Leonard sank a short birdie putt at the 16th to get 1- down. From over 190 yards out, Leonard, the seventh seed in the Sam Snead bracket, hit a spectacular approach that nearly went in, but the ball finally settled seven feet from the hole.

Fisher, who is much longer than Leonard, topped Leonard's second. Fisher, from a fairway bunker, hit his ball a foot inside Leonard's.

Leonard missed his birdie putt to open the door for Fisher, the ninth seed. The Englishman slammed it shut on Leonard when he poured his birdie putt into the heart of the cup.

The semifinals take place Saturday afternoon. The 36-hole final will begin Sunday morning and continue in the afternoon. The losers of Saturday's matches meet in an 18-hole consolation match on Sunday.
