Tampa, FL (My Sportsbook) - The
Tampa Bay Buccaneers have acquired tight end Kellen Winslow from the
Cleveland Browns in exchange for undisclosed draft picks.
Winslow, the sixth overall pick in the 2004 draft out of Miami-Florida, was a Pro Bowl selection in 2007 but endured an injury- and controversy-plagued five seasons in Cleveland.
"I am excited to be a part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Organization. I look forward to bringing my talents to an organization that believes in my abilities and enthusiasm to help make the Buccaneers Organization number one," said Winslow through a team-issued statement. "I'm glad to be back in Florida. I'm as happy as can be. I'm ready to get going."
After missing the final 14 games of his rookie year with a broken fibula, Winslow was injured in a motorcycle accident the following offseason and missed all of 2005. The operation of the motorcycle was a strict violation of Winslow's contract with the Browns.
In his first full season of 2006, Winslow started all 16 games and caught 89 passes, one year prior to his Pro Bowl campaign of 2007. Winslow was named to the Pro Bowl following a 2007 season in which he reeled in 82 passes and set career-highs for yards (1,106) and touchdowns (5). His 13.5 yards per catch average in 2007 led all NFL tight ends and he posted 17 receptions of 20 or more yards, also tops among all tight ends. With his 1,106 yards receiving, the son of Hall of Fame tight end Kellen Winslow became just the 14th tight end in NFL history to eclipse 1,000 yards receiving in a single season.
Winslow's injury problems reared their ugly head again in 2008, when the 25- year-old was limited to 43 receptions, 428 yards, and three touchdowns while missing six starts with shoulder and ankle injuries, as well as a much- publicized staph infection, for the 4-12 Browns.
"Everybody goes through pain in the National Football League," Winslow added. "I'm healthy."
Upon returning from the staph infection, an ailment which the team did not initially make public, Winslow publicly criticized the Browns and specifically then-general manager Phil Savage for their handling of the situation.
"Cleveland treated me right," Winslow stated, adding that there was a misunderstanding. "Everything didn't go as planned there, but I had a good time playing there. My time in Cleveland was valuable for my growth and experience and I appreciate all of my friends and fans who supported me in Cleveland. I look forward to this exciting new opportunity in my playing career."
For his career, Winslow has 219 receptions for 2,459 yards with 11 touchdowns in 44 games.
Following the trade, Cleveland does not have a first-round pick on its roster that was drafted by the team prior to 2005.
