Houston, TX (My Sportsbook) - Maryland's E.J. Henderson, Oklahoma's Tommie Harris, Texas' Cory Redding and Arizona State's Terrell Suggs were named the four finalists for the 2002 Rotary Lombardi Award.
The award is given annually to the college football offensive or defensive lineman who, in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the discipline of Vince Lombardi. They were selected in a vote of more than 400 members of the Rotary Lombardi Selection Committee.
Henderson, a senior linebacker, who also is a finalist for the 2002 Butkus Award, leads Maryland with 113 tackles. He has led the team in seven of 10 games this season in tackles. He is also tied for the team lead in forced fumbles with two and is second in sacks (4.5). He also owns the school record with 55.5 tackles for losses.
Harris, who is a sophomore defensive tackle, has 23 tackles despite missing one game due to injury. He leads the team with 15 quarterback hurries and also has six tackles for loss, two sacks, a fumble recovery and one pass deflection.
Redding, a senior defensive lineman, ranks third on the Longhorns defense with 55 tackles. He leads the team in tackles for losses with 16, sacks with 5.5 and quarterbacks pressures with 30.
Suggs, who is a junior defensive end, is fourth on the team with 55 tackles. He leads the nation with 19.5 sacks. He has also recorded 26 tackles for losses and has forced five fumbles.
The four finalists will be flown to Houston to attend the gala Rotary Lombardi Award Dinner, which will be held on the field of Houston's Reliant Stadium on December 11th. Former President George Bush is the Honorary Chairman of the 2002 event and will speak at the dinner, as will legendary Green Bay Packer lineman Jerry Kramer and Houston Texans owner Bob McNair.
