Kings top Wild in shootout

St. Paul, MN (My Sportsbook) - Drew Doughty made up for a costly giveaway by scoring the game-winner in the shootout as the Los Angeles Kings clipped the Minnesota Wild, 2-1, at Xcel Energy Center.

Jack Johnson, another LA blueliner, had the lone regulation goal and Jonathan Quick came up with 23 saves to get the win.

After beginning February with four straight wins, the Kings dropped five of the next six before Tuesday's triumph, which started a five-game road trip. LA has won six of its last seven on the road.

"It was a tight-checking game tonight. We knew we needed those two points," said Doughty. "We didn't want to give them one (Minnesota) but it was good to get the two."

Antti Miettinen lit the lamp for Minnesota, which was riding a three-game losing streak before taking on two of the top four teams in the West over the weekend, making a statement with wins against Detroit and Chicago.

Niklas Backstrom took the hard-luck loss after turning aside 24-of-25 shots.

Johnson scored with a forehand shot from in close as the session's third shooter and Mikko Koivu's backhander rattled off the right post.

Backstrom denied Patrick O'Sullivan on a shot in close but Miettinen came back and fired the puck between the legs of Quick to keep things going.

Doughty then lost the handle in close while switching from forehand to backhand but the disc still squirted between the legs of Backstrom and Brent Burns was turned back by the right pad of Quick for the win.

"We played well. There was nothing we could do differently there on that goal," said Koivu of Doughty's shootout winner. "We had our chances to score another one but we couldn't capitalize on the power play."

Following a scoreless opening period, Miettinen's short-handed tally got Minnesota on the board 5:48 into the second as LA's Doughty coughed up the puck at the Wild blueline sending Koivu on a 2-on-1 rush up the left wing with Miettinen. Koivu's pass hit Miettinen cutting across the slot and his forehand deke allowed for an easy backhand score.

LA tied things up on its next chance with the man advantage as Johnson banked the puck off a defenseman in front from behind the net for the equalizer with a little over five minutes left in the second frame.

A defensive battle ensued in the third with the teams skating into overtime tied. O'Sullivan had a chance to win it for the Kings with a breakaway but Backstrom denied the forehand shot from in close and sent the game to a shootout.

Game Notes

The Wild have won seven of their last 11 versus Los Angeles, but have lost all three meetings so far this year...Minnesota had won four straight and five of six as the host in the series before a 5-2 victory by the Kings on January 20 at Xcel Energy Center...Minnesota's leading goal-scorer Owen Nolan missed the game after suffering a fractured toe versus the Blackhawks. The extent of his injury won't be known until the swelling goes down. Nolan leads the Wild with 17 goals. Teammate Andrew Brunette (lower body) returned to the lineup after missing the last two contests. Brunette saw his 509 consecutive games played streak end on Saturday. It had been the longest active streak in the NHL...The Wild are 18-12-4 at home this year and begin a six-game road trip Friday in Calgary.
