New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Miguel Cotto rebounded from his only professional loss by scoring a dominating fifth-round technical knockout of Englishman Michael Jennings to take the vacant WBO welterweight title Saturday night.
The 28-year-old Cotto (33-1, 27 KOs), who was coming off an 11th-round TKO loss to Antonio Margarito last July when he lost his WBA welterweight crown, floored Jennings three times, including twice in the fourth round.
The 31-year-old Jennings (34-2), fighting outside the United Kingdom for the first time in his career, couldn't keep up with his quicker opponent and referee Benji Esteves stopped the bout with 24 seconds left in round five.
It was a pro-Cotto crowd at Madison Square Garden, and the Puerto Rican native, now a three-time world champion, didn't disappoint his fans.
In the fourth round, Cotto landed a good left hook to stun Jennings and then a left to the body sent down Jennings to his knee. With less than 30 seconds left in the round, another body shot floored Jennings again, and the Englishman was pounded in the corner as the round came to a close.
In the fifth round, Jennings went to one knee in the closing minute as he succumbed to Cotto's speed and power, particularly the left hand. This time, though, it was a straight right to the face that put down Jennings.
Cotto's loss to Margarito though brought a lot of questions. That's because Margarito was found guilty of illegal hand wraps before his loss against Shane Mosley last month. Margarito and his trainer were each given one-year suspensions.
