New Orleans, LA (My Sportsbook) - Center Tyson Chandler is headed back to the Hornets after the original trade to Oklahoma City was rescinded because the Thunder's medical staff failed to clear Chandler after the physical.
In the deal announced Tuesday, Oklahoma City was going to send forward Joe Smith, center Chris Wilcox and the draft rights to center DeVon Hardin to New Orleans.
"We welcome Tyson back with open arms," said Hornets general manager Jeff Bower. "We went into this trade to garner more frontcourt depth to add to our team as we continue our push towards the playoffs. We expect Tyson and the rest of our big guys to step up to the challenge."
There was no reason given for why the Thunder rescinded the deal, but Chandler missed the final 12 games before the All-Star break due to a sprained left ankle.
"We were pleased to add Tyson to the Thunder roster," said Thunder GM Sam Presti. "During the course of the physical examination and outside consultations some questions arose that gave us cause for concern. We felt this course of action was the best for our organization."
Smith, Wilcox and the draft rights to Hardin will immediately rejoin the Thunder.
The move to turn over the deal came with Thursday's 3 p.m. (et) trade deadline staring at both teams.
Chandler, who spent the last three seasons with the Hornets, is averaging 8.8 points and 8.3 rebounds in 32 contests this season. Chandler was selected second overall in the 2001 NBA Draft out of high school by the Los Angeles Clippers and was dealt to Chicago. He played five seasons with the Bulls before going to the Hornets. Over 524 career games, the 7-foot-1 Chandler owns averages of 8.2 points and 9.0 rebounds.
Wilcox was the eighth overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft, also by the Clippers. He is in his seventh season in the league, and was averaging 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in 37 games for the Thunder. In 423 career games with the Clippers and SuperSonics/Thunder, Wilcox has posted 9.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest.
Smith was another high draft pick, going first overall in 1995 to the Warriors. He is averaging 6.6 points and 4.5 boards in 36 games this season for the Thunder, and owns career numbers of 11.7 points and 6.8 rebounds.
Hardin, the 50th overall pick in the 2008 draft by the Thunder, averaged 9.3 points and 7.4 rebounds in his senior season at Cal.
