Flyers, Isles battle in Philly

(My Sportsbook) - The New York Islanders will try to halt a four-game losing streak when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers for this afternoon's Atlantic Division battle at the Wachovia Center.

The Islanders have dropped four straight on the heels of a four-game winning streak and have lost 12 out of 16 games (4-10-2) since the start of January. New York is dead last in the NHL with just 38 points on the year.

The Isles haven't fared well against the Flyers recently either, as Philadelphia has won seven straight and 10 of the last 11 meetings between the clubs, including all three encounters this season. New York has also been defeated in each of its last six trips to the Wachovia Center.

New York was handed its most recent loss Wednesday night in New Jersey. Zach Parise scored twice, including the game-winner late in the third period, as the Devils posted a 4-2 decision over the Isles at Prudential Center.

Radek Martinek and Kyle Okposo tallied for the Islanders, who have recorded a total of seven goals during their current slide.

Joey MacDonald kept his team in the contest, stopping 46-of-49 shots, but still saw his record drop to 11-23-4 on the season.

The Islanders, who are wrapping a brief two-game road trip today, are just 6-20-2 as the visiting team this season. New York has dropped three straight and 17 of its last 18 road tilts.

The Flyers, meanwhile, have lost three of their last five games and had a two- game win streak halted in Thursday's lopsided loss to visiting Ottawa. The trio of Dany Heatley, Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza each registered a goal and an assist to lift the Senators to the 5-2 decision at the Wachovia Center.

With the flu bug finally subdued, Flyers captain Mike Richards and fellow forward Scottie Upshall returned to the lineup after identical three-game absences. Richards lit the lamp and Upshall picked up the primary assist on Darroll Powe's marker.

Antero Niittymaki allowed five goals on 23 shots for Philadelphia.

The Flyers have 65 points on the year and are currently sixth in the Eastern Conference standings.

Philly has a solid 15-7-3 record as the host this year, but has lost two straight and three of its last four home tests. The Flyers will visit the rival New York Rangers on Sunday afternoon before returning to the City of Brotherly Love for a two-game homestand.
