(My Sportsbook) - A pair of Western Conference playoff hopefuls face off tonight at the American Airlines Center, where the
Dallas Stars host a
Vancouver Canucks team in search of its longest winning streak of the season.
The Canucks have put together four consecutive victories following an ugly eight-game losing skid to close out January. It's the club longest winning run since a four-game tear from November 19-24.
Vancouver maintained its recent form with last night's 4-3 road decision over Phoenix, in which the Canucks scored three times in the third period to erase a 3-1 deficit.
Henrik Sedin netted the go-ahead goal with 9:13 left to play, and Roberto Luongo made the lead stand by making 15 saves in the third period. The All- Star goaltender stopped 25 shots on the night.
Mattias Ohlund, Pavol Demitra and Alexander Edler also recorded goals for Vancouver in Thursday's triumph.
The Canucks have now racked up 21 goals during their four-game surge, with the line combination of Mats Sundin, Ryan Kesler and Demitra doing most of the damage. Both Kesler (4 goals, 4 assists) and Demitra (2 goals, 6 assists) have eight points over that stretch, while Sundin has amassed 4 goals and three assists during that time.
Thursday's victory moved the Canucks past the Stars and into sixth place in the Western Conference standings with 60 points. Vancouver trails Northwest Division leader Calgary by nine points at the moment.
The Canucks will be closing out a three-game road trip tonight that began with Tuesday's 6-4 win at St. Louis and own a 13-9-4 mark as the visitor this season.
Vancouver has not had much success against the Stars in Dallas over the past few years, however. The Canucks had lost in seven straight visits to the American Airlines Center before coming through with a 4-3 win on March 15, 2008.
Dallas, which sits just one point behind the Canucks in the playoff race, had won seven times in an eight-game span prior to Wednesday's 1-0 setback to visiting Phoenix. Marty Turco recorded 28 saves between the pipes for the Stars but was outdueled by counterpart Ilya Bryzgalov, who stopped all 33 Dallas shots he faced.
The Stars will attempt to rebound in this evening's finale of a four-game homestand. Dallas, which is 15-7-4 on home ice this season, opened the residency with back-to-back victories over the New York Rangers and Nashville and has won five of its last six matchups at the American Airlines Center.
These teams have met once previously this season, with the Stars earning a 3-2 shootout win in Vancouver on January 4.
