Buffalo, NY (My Sportsbook) - Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and an assist, and rookie goaltender Brian Elliott made 31 saves as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 3-1 at HSBC Arena, sweeping the home-and-home series.

Jason Spezza and Shean Donovan also tallied for the Senators, who edged Buffalo 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday at Scotiabank Place. Ottawa had lost four in a row prior to the back-to-back wins.

Ales Kotalik accounted for the lone Sabres goal, while Ryan Miller turned aside 20-of-23 shots. Buffalo has now dropped three of five overall.

The Sabres finished 1-for-12 on the power play, skating with the man advantage for 19:49 of game time.

Spezza opened the scoring at 5:51 of the first period with the Senators skating on the power play. With Adam Mair off serving a hooking minor, Brendan Bell's cross-ice pass from the low right circle deflected off Spezza's skate in the goal crease and went in. The play was briefly reviewed, but was upheld after it was determined Spezza didn't use a kicking motion to score his 20th of the season.

In the second, the Senators struck for a pair of goals within 2 1/2 minutes. First, it was Donovan beating Miller with a wrist shot from in close on a feed from Dean McAmmond at 9:44.

Then, Alfredsson's slap shot from the top of the right circle squeezed through the pads of Miller at 12:15 put Ottawa up by a 3-0 margin, the visitors' second power-play score of the tilt.

The contest turned ugly less than a minute later as Senators defenseman Jason Smith was assessed six minutes in minor penalties for roughing Patrick Kaleta. The veteran blueliner hit Kaleta from behind right in front of the Sabres bench, then took a couple of punches at the Buffalo forward and also received a 10-minute misconduct.

Buffalo was unable to capitalize on the great opportunity and Ottawa held a three-goal cushion heading into the second intermission.

Kotalik's power-play marker on a slap shot from the top of the left circle at 1:29 of the third got the hosts within two. But Ottawa tightened up on the defensive end and limited the Sabres chances for most of the stanza.

Buffalo pulled Miller with 1:24 remaining for an extra attacker but were unable to get closer.

Game Notes

Buffalo will host San Jose on Friday, while Ottawa continues its five- game road trip with a visit to Philadelphia on Thursday...Ottawa has taken three of the four encounters with the Sabres this season and has won seven of the last 10 matchups.
