(My Sportsbook) - The
New York Rangers would love for nothing more than to halt their season-long losing streak by defeating one of their biggest division rivals. New York, losers of four straight, visits the first-place
New Jersey Devils tonight in an Atlantic Division clash at the Prudential Center.
The Rangers enjoyed a very successful campaign versus the Devils last year, winning seven of the eight contests between the two clubs. That momentum carried over into the postseason, as New York eliminated New Jersey in five games in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals before falling to Pittsburgh in the following round.
New York then won its first two matchups versus New Jersey this year, but the Devils have answered with back-to-back wins over the Rangers. New York has lost in two of its last three regular-season trips to the Garden State as well.
The Blueshirts enjoyed an early reign at the top of the Atlantic Division, but have since been overtaken by the Devils. Having lost four straight, New York finds itself third in the standings with 63 points, two back of second-place Philadelphia and six points behind the front-running Devils.
Coming off a shootout loss to Atlanta last Tuesday, the Rangers traveled to Dallas on Friday and were handed an embarrassing 10-2 setback by the Stars. It marked the first time New York had allowed 10 goals in a single game since doing so versus Pittsburgh on April 9, 1993.
With Henrik Lundqvist out due to the flu, Stephen Valiquette allowed all 10 goals on 39 shots faced. Lundqvist and Paul Mara are both battling illness, but were able to practice on Sunday and should return tonight.
Nikolai Zherdev scored both New York goals to give him 15 on the season. However, he has just three markers over his last 17 contests. Chris Drury assisted on both goals for the Rangers, who haven't lost five straight since January 2-10 of last season.
New York will also be aiming to halt a four-game road losing streak tonight and is 13-11-2 as the visiting team this year.
New Jersey had won nine of its last 10 games before taking on the streaking Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. The Devils managed just one goal in the contest -- a tally from Dainius Zubrus -- in a 3-1 loss to Los Angeles that began a five-game homestand. New Jersey fell to 15-10-1 at home this year.
Patrik Elias had an assist for the Devils to give him four over his last three games, as well as three goals and seven helpers in his last nine outings. Both Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner had point streaks halted, though. Parise had notched five goals and six assists over an eight-game run prior to Saturday's loss, while Langenbrunner had seven goals and two assists in his previous five games.
